All of you know by now that Michael Irvin was picked up on a warrant due to an unpaid speeding ticket and during the subsequent search was found to have a crack pipe and bags that has traces of hippie lettuce in them in his car.
He maintains that the crack pipe was from a buddy of his that was at his house for Thanksgiving. He found the glass wang on his friend's person...and discarded it in his automobile so (a) his family wouldn't see it and (b) Otto the garbageman wouldn't find it in Irvin's trash.
Irvin is "suspended" for this weekend's NFL shows on ESPN for failing to tell them about the arrest. The network knew nothing about it until reporters started calling the station for comment. "I was just scared, hoping and praying that maybe it would go away," Irvin said. "I was told that I paid the fine and it was over. I was hoping it was over."
Of course, there are many people who don't believe the "it's not my crack pipe" story. Back in 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony coke possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor hippie lettuce possession charges. He also was arrested on drug possession charges in 2000, but they were later dropped.
Not great timing for Irvin, who is currently a semifinalist in the Hall Of Fame voting.
