Yeah, the Vikings Ran Up the Score -- Who Cares?

The big controversy coming out of Sunday was the fact that the Dallas Cowboys felt that the Minnesota Vikings ran up the score on them. Up 27-3 with just two minutes left in the game, the Vikings went for it on fourth down and threw a TD pass.

Dallas was irate since they believed that it was running up the score and poor sportsmanship.

Well, it is ... but so what?

My stance on this has always been that running up the score is fine in professional sports but not in the amateur ranks. In high school and college sports, you can have a gross mismatch of talent going against each other. For a mighty team to spank a team filled with guys who just want to play is wrong. I've been on both ends of this and it actually doesn't feel good either way.

As for pro sports, I don't care about running up the score. You are professional athletes! You get paid to play the game! How can you complain when you cannot stop your opponent from scoring? Are you saying the only way you can compete is if the other team quits against you? I don't buy that. Especially since when Dallas got the ball, it wasn't as if they were sitting on the ball. They were trying to score. Despite the unlikeliness this happening, Dallas could've scored a long TD, got the onside kick, scored another long TD, get another onside ... okay, you know what I'm saying.

I've seen enough comebacks during my time that I can understand when a team keeps stepping on their opponent's throat. Sure, a 24-point comeback with two minutes left seems very unlikely, but it isn't out the realm of possibility. Coaches stress playing for the entire 60 minutes.

You can say that I'm reaching on that point and you are probably right. But as professional athletes, you cannot complain that you cannot stop the other team.

Yep, the Cowboys should just man up, shut up, and remember it when the time for payback comes. For we all know that payback is a...will not say the last word for the sake of those easily offended, but we all know what the word is :)

saints 45 cards 14, there wasn't this nonsense talked about the saints running up on arizona. at what point was new orleans suppose to quit putting up points. i suspect that the dallas fans had quit watching during the 3rd qtr.

Kick the field goal, be up by 27 with 1:55 to go.

Seriously, if the Cowboys can only score 3 pts in 58 mins, who would reasonably think they could score 3 tds & a field goal in less than 2 mins?

Think about it.

Classless call by the team. Should be ashamed of themselves to treat another profession team this way.

Really taints the great game they played.

Running up the score?? Come on!! I guess it's ok for the Cowboys to run up scores against Philly though. Has everyone already forgotten about. All in All, the Cowboys took a Texas whopping in Minnesota. Like they say, Everything is big in Texas...

the Cowboys were burnign timeouts to stop the clock. They were lining up and stacking against the run, if they are continuing to play, then the other professional sports team is obligated to continue. The pass made sense to me as it helps protect the linemen from injury in the goal line stand.
Easy to roll up on a leg or ankle.
Rest the running back and throw the ball away if the play is not there. If the tight end was covered, this would not have happened. Yes, the game was over. What difference does the score make? It is not like they went for an on-side kick afterward.
I can understand being angry and frustrated by the lopsided loss after all the sucess that came before the game, but the Cowboys were manhandled on both sides of the ball. Holding the Vikings responsible for the failure of the Cowboys defense to cover is just not reasonable in professional sports. If Dallas had given up, they would not have burned those time outs. Don't expect the Vikings to lay down if the Cowboys are still going at it strong.

there is just a bunch of cowboys haters around. this is professional football. no room for running up the score on what is suppose to be a respectful game among the teams and players. if they allowed a rushing TD then thats fine because they should stop them. its the way they did it on a hard play action or even just kick a field goal. think how you would feel if the cowboys did that to your team or someone else that late in the 4th quarter. you wouldnt think highly about that now would you? there is no need to rub it in like that. try being in the other shoes and you would know that was tasteless. the saints should run up the score on them and see how they react to that.

and about being lopsided i dont know if you were watching the same game but the cowboys were able to move the ball against them by running the ball early on. they got away from that and tried forcing the pass and when a d knows when a team gets too in love with the pass that they start to come after them. when they dont expect the threat of the run. it was a mix of mistakes, turnovers, bad play calling. that caused the cowboys loss. missed field goals early deflate a teams confidence. maybe not so much the first one but the second miss kept the score to where they tried the pass too much. the cowboys d is decent and held up alright for what they were up against. it truely wasnt as bad as the final score shown. eliminate the big plays and the vikes didnt do a whole lot. the cowboys had been good at eliminating the big play most of the season. lack of concentration when 9 outta 10 times the cowboys wouldve won that game

Come on people - Get real! You complain when a team 'rests it starters' at the end of the season and then you complain when a team plays all 4 quarters in a Play Off Game. I didn't hear much, if any, complaing about the Saints'running up the score'. What's the difference? Or, are they the "Chosen Ones" this year?! What should the Vikes have done? The field was too short to punt, maybe too long for a FG attempt, should Brett have taken a knee on 4th down or thrown it away?? Better yet,to make Dallas feel better (&for you Favre haters)he should've thrown an INT or fumbled it...RIGHT?! NOT!! The Vikes were there to play, and that is what they did. ALL 4 Quarters!

Wow. FootballGirl hit it right on the nose. "Come on people - Get real! You complain when a team 'rests it starters' at the end of the season and then you complain when a team plays all 4 quarters in a Play Off Game." Great take!

I guess I'm in the minority here, but here goes: Good sportsmanship belongs in ALL levels of competition. If you're going to play, be gentlemen and good sports--and that means you don't keep stomping the other team when it's clear they're no threat to your victory. Show some class; there's no need to humiliate your opponent. Besides, remember that it could be YOUR team being badly used, and how would that feel?

baemecon said...

All of you people whining about the last TD need to, as Childress said, choke it back and shut up.

If the Cowboys had removed Ware, Spencer, Ratliff, and the rest, lined up at the goalline, and not moved when the ball was snapped -- thereby giving up -- then sure, kneel the ball. Newsflash, they didn't!. I'm sure the Cowboys would have been perfectly happy to sack Favre to end the game, or pick off his last pass and run it back. They kept the starters on the field to play, and they even called timeouts at the 6:00 mark, down 24!. That's just asking for it. The game was over then too, so why bother?

Get real whiners.

Come on Dallas - grow up! I guess you've never, ever run up the score before - YES!

susan3716 said...

We have never run the score up in the last 2 minutes of a game...get real. But..Favre being the self centered person he is, is also the one that was telling his coach HOW HE was going to play the game. Not how the coach wanted him to play it a couple of games ago. Total Classless! But thats ok...we are very proud of our cowboys...still have great stats..and also NFC East Champions...eat your heart out you cowboy haters...lol The Vi queens are nothing without Favre and he knows it.

OOPS, here Cowboys, take the ball, we have too many points now.
How come the Giants beat us 41 to 0 a few years ago and that was ok.
Grow up-this is football, not a quilting bee.

We can tell who the cowgirl fans are, It's ok for the cowgirls to beat the snot out of someone and laugh and giggle about it, but dont let it happen to the Cowgirls. Are the sports reporters getting as bad as the one you see on regular TV, I dont watch sports wrap up shows for their feelings about how one team should have taken a knee or ran some stupid play, tried a long field goal or what ever, just so the team they like didnt get embarassed. How many times this year has a team been shut out, I remember a few weeks back a couple teams got their heads handed to them in the wild card weekend, no one said anything like "that team was mean to us, the way they kicked our ass's, that was really unsportsman like, we should take up the whole weekend and part of next week having people discuss whether or not that team should have done it, we are the cowgirls why did they do that to us, dont the know who we are" lol, later

Aikman said "If you don't like it, stop it". The cryboys didn't. They forgot week 17, up by 24 (sound familiar), Cowboy ball with 2:30 left. 4th and three at Eagle 35, and Romo drops back to take a knee? No, to pass! What stopped it was a sack. Enough of the whinning over something you tried to do to someone else!!!

MNmomofone said...

to those of you who comment that we Vikings are nothing without Favre - I only ask this....If this is true - why did Romo get sacked so many times against us? We have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.

"In high school and college sports...."
We have always said that pro athletes are role models to our kids. Well, what does this tell them. They should have kicked the field goal. It was fourth down - two minutes left. Good coaching should have been to put points on the board. If it's incomplete it's a bad call.
Everybody's a hypocrite, if it happens to their team they don't like, but it's ok the other way around. Who thinks Randy Moss rubbing his ass on the goalpost was classless? Every real fan including die-hard Vikings fans!

When Dallas was running up the score on Philly it was all good, but when the Vikes do it back its soooooo bad. Don't the Dallas fans realize where Childress coached before Minnesota? Yep, Philly. Payback was a B**** wasn't it?

Pavara said...

The fans paid huge amounts of money to see a full football game. If it weren't for them, the players wouldn't have jobs. Should the team have quit playing the game and deprive their loyal fans of their full effort just because it might hurt the other teams feelings???

I am the biggest non cowboy fan. Who elected them America's team, not me. I was a diehard Skins fan until we got our own home team(GO PANTHERS). I think it showed low class what Favre did. He is what made that decision to throw on 4th and2, not the assitant coach, Childress. Payback's are a real b####. hope the cowboys talk to the Saints, and they sack Favre so many times that we won't have to hear he's retiring, coming back, not coming, then show up after training camp is over and get the spot 2 or3 have busted their backs to earn it. He is totaly unprofessional. I hope the final score is Saints 53 Vikings 12 (all field goals).

Kiln Krusader said...

Earlier in the game Troy Aikman/Joe buck commented on the respect one of the Dallas pass rushers showed Favre.
He held him up instead of planting him in the turf.
That's what this is all about. Respect each other.
You want to see T-Jack in there?

Professional athletes and teams have a responsibility to kids who are learning the sports and sportsmanship. There is a reason why there is a lack of good sportsmanship in the grade schools and college rank. There is a lack of good examples and role models for young kids to respect and emulate. It is a societal responsibility and actions and events portray the society we live in and how our society evolve for better or worse.

Saint4ever said...

Typical Dallas whining mentality when they get their collective asses handed to them.
Which poses the question: Which heals faster, a bruised cervix or bruised ego?
America's Team? I don't think so. America's Team wears camouflage, combat boots and has alot more class than Dallas could ever muster. Go home, lick your wounds and relive your days of glory.

Classless? This coming from Cowboys fans? That is the pot calling the kettle black. When the boys are winning everything is good and the Dallas fans are the first to shove it down everybody's throats. I have never seen a team that celebrates a tackle after a 4 yard gain as much as the Cowboys. When they get a first down, one would think they just won the SB. Dallas was beaten down in EVERY phase of the game. Romo and the Cowboys believed the media’s hype and paid for it. Romo played as expected, the D line was a bit of a surprise but Favre was protected and picked apart the OVERATED secondary. Shut up and go back into you hole Dallas fans! Your boys are more comfortable watching the play-offs from their couch anyway. Dallas wins 9 out of 10 times??? Someone else is drinking the Kool-aid..typical Dallas fan.

I'm sorry! I am sick to death of listening to all the whining about "running up the Score". It's not like a bunch of pee wees are on the field playing in their first rodeo. These are professionals, playing in a highly charged and emotional playoff game. If you are a TRUE football fan, it is moments like this that you tune in to see. If you are backing the losing team, it hurts. If you are backing the winning team, it ROCKs! The Vikes have been on both sides of this situation. You watch football long enough you learn to suck it up and deal with it! I lost money on that final score, I gladly conceded it. That TD was like an exclamation point on that whole game. It showed me that my team MEANT it. Too many times spent in agony over SOFT play at the end of games where one slipped through our fingers. Bring on the Saints! I am looking forward to another exciting game next week against a very worthy opponent. Go VIKES!! STAY AGGRESSIVE and HUNGRY!

I am a Cowboys fan. The cowboys got beat by the better team. Congrats to Vikings. I see where people are saying that Dallas ran up the score on the Eagles. What game was that beacuse I missed it. In the Dallas-Eagles game the Cowboys had 27 points in the first half and only scored 7 after that. There was 5 minutes left in the 3rd and all of the fourth quarter where they didn't score. They were running the ball alot to run out the clock. With 2 minutes left in the Dallas-vikings game did the vikings really think that Dallas was going to be albe to score 4 times againts them with so little time left that they had to score the touchdown. Did they really fear Dallas that much. I guess thats a good thing for Dallas then. Good luck to the Vikings.

It is the job of the defense to not allow points by the opposing team. The Cowboy defense FAILED to do their job.

Saint4ever said...

Face it Dall-Ass fans! On that day your team failed and failed miserably. Suffice it to say they sucked! DeMarcus Where?

Almost every starting player on the Cowboy's defense is paid a million or more dollars to stop the opponents offense from scoring points. Stop your crying and do your job.

Susan 3716: I am dreadfully sorry, dear, but the Vikings simply DON'T have the time to eat their hearts out - They're going to 'Nawlins, baby!!! Most of the Cowboys' players played hard and well on Sunday, only to have their efforts diminished by Keith Brookings' childish display on the field at the end of the game, and by some fans' howl of "No fair, running up the score!" The Cowboys are a professional football team; They have done it to other teams in the past, and I can guarantee you that this won't be the last time it happens to them.
And as for your irrational rant towards Brett Favre - When you've taken as many full-on hits as he has and gotten up off the field and gone back to win the game; when you win as many games, break as many records, and do it all at the age of 40 - THEN you can judge him as self-centered or whatever you want to accuse him of being. Pack up your bile in your old saddle-bag until next season, Cowgurl.

Friends in Football, If anybody is upset about the late T.D., well then go to a game of this calibur and tell me you would not want to see this score happen. If it were in Dallas then maybe. However, these Minnesota fan's have waited and waited. I would score just for the life long die hard fans of Minnesota!

Sooo... let's see..final score 34-3. Seems like Minnesota running up the score was the least of Dallas' problems. Relax...no one heard my team [Titans] crying about being bombarded 59-0 in week six. We took our medicine and came out swinging for the rest of the season. Do I feel sorry for multimillionaire NFL players grumbling about getting scored on? That's illogical. I didn't know that you're supposed to take the last part of the game off.... guess I'll go to work tomorrow and let my boss know that I'll be getting off at 3:45pm instead of five...I don't want to 'run up the work'.....

To all you cowgirl fans. I hope that every team that plays them run up the score. I was a very big fan of the Cowboys until Jerry Jones fired Tom Landry the way he did. I will alway want someone to just embrasses Dallas as long as Jones owns the team. He destroyed what was a great team. Now I hope Dallas losses every game they play. Yes I hate Jones for what he did to Tom Landry and will never forgive him for that. He is a worthless piece of garbage and I hope him and his cowgirls get whupped up on everytime they play someone. In addition, those are cowgirl professional atheletes get paid more money than just about everyone that is on this blog trying to protect them from being embrasses. If they cannot do their job which is to stop the other team from scoring, then too bad. I wish that the Vikes would have scored even more points. To the Cowgirl fans suck it up. The Cowgirls suck. Jerry Jones suck. Tony Romo suck.
