Was This The Worst Super Bowl Ever???

I like to think that I am not so myopic about current events.  I don't like to think something is the "greatest" or "worst" ever just moments after the game ends.  I mean, there have been some movies that I watched at the theater that I really enjoyed....then see them a few months later on DVD and realize how bad they really were.

But I am gonna right now.

So, Super Bowl XL.  Was it good?

When I think of SUPER Bowl...I think of at least one darn good team in the game.  Sure, there have been some blowouts....but the team doing the blowing out was like a machine.  This looked like it could've been that Cardinals-Niners game in Mexico City.

Well, the MVP caught 5 passes....albeit for 123 yards.

The winning QB threw 9-of-21 for just 123 yards.....no TDs and two interceptions.  Pittsburgh completed only 10 passes in the game [the record for a winning team is 6 by Miami in SB VIII]....with the wide receiver throwing more TDs [1] than the starting QB [0].  Roethlisberger's QB rating was 22.6.  Ouch!!

Big Ben's QB rating was just 1 point higher than the Steelers' point total.  Double OUCH!

Seattle had the ball for 7 more minutes.....gained nearly 60 more yards.....and won the turnover margin.  Yet lost by 11.  Maybe it had something to do with all those Seahawk defenders leaving the game with various injuries.

What also lends itself for the game being a dud was the crappy hype for the game.  In the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, the main story was Jerome Bettis and the Joey Porter-Jeremy Stevens verbal battle.  Well, Bettis wasn't that huge of a factor in the game [he did get 43 yards...12 of which on one play].  Joey Porter didn't do much....recording just 3 tackles.  Stevens was a bit more in the limelight...catching a TD pass and dropping four passes.  He also had a big catch negated by penalty.

Even Troy Polamalu was pretty much a non-factor.

No one hyped Hines Ward all week....he ended up with the MVP trophy.  I mean, this was a guy who was in the EXACT same position as Terrell Owens, yet sucked it up and kept his mouth shut and got two major trophies today.  No one really hypedup Hasselbeck too much....and he almost threw for 300 yards.

There were two missed FGs.

Or what about Seattle's masterful job at screwing up the 2-minute drill before the half? Or screwing the 2-minute drill at the end of the game?

And what about Shaun Alexander??  Sure, he had a game high 95-yards rushing...but where was he?  This is the MVP of the league...and he stands on the sidelines during crucial moments of the game??  Reminds me of USC not having Reggie Bush on the field on that late crucial 4th down play of the Rose Bowl.  Why is this guy the "most valuable player" when you can't use him unless you are running the football????

And the officiating will be in question for quite some time....especially in the Pacific Northwest.  We can all debate about whether or not Big Ben broke the plane of the goalline....but how in the heck could the line judge determine that he did!?!?!  There is nothing that the naked eye in the moment could see that would lead you to believe the ball got in.  Heck, looking at the replay, you can barely [if at all] see any arguement the ball did get in.  There was the "interference call" on Darrell Jackson's apparant TD grab.  A few series prior, there was a holding call on a big catch of his.  There was another holding call that even John Madden thought the officials screwed up.  There was the no-call on Big Ben after he clearly signals for a timeout after the play clock hits zero [they gave him the TO].  They called a fumble when a guy tagged-up Hasselbeck as he was going to the ground.

But the biggest pile of crap was Matt Hasselbeck getting a 15-yarder for tackling the guy that picked off his pass.  He was flagged for a "low block"....when he was tackling a guy???  Horrible!!

And Pittsburgh won by making three big plays.  The magestic Big Ben pass on 3rd-and-28 to Ward [which should've had some illegal men downfield flags as The 12th Man brilliantly noticed].  The Willie Parker TD run.  And the Antawn Randle-El toss to Ward for the knockout punch.  Well, on the Parker run and Randle-El pass...both were blown plays by backup safey Eric Pruitt who was only in the game due to Seahawk injuries in their secondary.

And it isn't just THE GAME THAT SUCKED!!  Aaron Neville singing the National Anthem sounded like the ol' Katerine Hepburn after downing a pot of coffee.  The Rolling Stones looked like the California Raisins and had their halftime show censored.  Even the commercials were subpar [there were some good ones though].

So....how bad was it?  Well, in the pantheon of bad Super Bowls....it may rank up there with the Ravens-Giants [who most people forget ever happened].  Many people will put it up there with the Colts-Cowboys Super Bowl V that was so sloppy....but that game was saved with a late FG to win the game.  The Broncos-Falcons game was pretty bad as well....but had the Elway factor to it.

But it may not be as bad as Super Bowl VI that the Cowboys beat the Dolphins 24-3.  The three points is the lowest total in Super Bowl history.  Roger Staubach was MVP with just 119 yards passing.  Of course this game jump started the Cowboys' place as America's Team.....and jump started the Dolphins into the next season where they went 17-0.

Unless the Steelers use this as a lauch pad for something of significance [which could happen]...this game may be a bit forgettable.

Well said, figured pittsburgh would win, but didn't think that the ref's would be such a factor as to the outcome.

I did'nt have a horse in this race and I admire Cowher and Holmgren, but please had the shoe been on the other foot regarding the worst officiating probably in stupid bowl history, steeler fans would be saying the same things  Seattle fans are...The NFL should be ashamed of the horrible calls made...it did cost Seattle the game. I'm not so sure watching NFL football is in my future plans unless they figure this out...at some point you have to let them play and that was not happening in this game.

Yes! The Seahawks have the 12th man as a fan, and the steelers have the REF'S! Is there a penalty for having to many players on the field- it seemed as though the Steelers had at least 3 extra players on the field at all times! ( I wonder how much it cost to pay off the Ref's?) It's a shame, I watched a game where the Seahawks were the better team, but the officials made sure they didn't win.  I hope the Steelers fans are happy with the Ref's.

There should be an investigation!!!

I think the Ref's should have been voted for MVP!

I hate to think the dud bowl was fixed but how else do you explain the biased officiating Now I am a huge football fan and this show by nfl was inexcusable And please someone bury the stones or at least tell them there dead

As a fan of neither team 1 thing is for certain.  Pittsburgh was not better then the Seahawks.  Seahawks what can I tell you.  It seems this game was predetermined and the calls were horrid.  It truly makes me want to NEVER watch NFL again.  They were absolutely robbed at very crucial times in the game.

Anonymous said...

The Refs in the "Fixed Bowl" should be investigated ...if not arrested. Lat time I checked, stealing was at least a misdemeanor. That was the most obvious corrupt scenario sense the White Sox scandal. Unbelievable!

Anonymous said...

Did Pittsburgh even have a pentalty called against them at the Super Bowl?  This was one of the worst games officated to date.  I know you can't leave the game up to the refs but really.  You take away Ben's non touchdown and give the Seahawks back the one lost in the end zone and the throw at the goal line late in the game called back this is a totally different game.  Even John Madden said hey those are not penalties.  When the officals are that bad it really takes away some of the glory for the winning team.  The Seahawk's lost but Pittsburgh did not earn their win.  Too bad for all concern.  I'm a Colts fan so our season was over way to early this year!  Way to go Antawn Randle-el what a class act!!!!!

go steelers!

For someone to say that the Steelers didn't earn their win is a crock! If they didn't play well then I must be blind. I agree that the officials were idiots, but come on! If it was your home team, I doubt that you would say something so ridiculous! Way to go Steelers! You DID play an awesome game, and you deserved to win one for the thumb!

It could have been a good game if they didn't have those obviously biased refs. in the Superbowl. The games outcome was pre determined and some of the refs. should really be ashamed of their calls. The Seahawks loss would have been acceptable to me if the refs. weren't so blatently biased in the way they called this game.If the Superbowl is to determine which team is the best, wouldn't you think they could at least let the player's play?I really believe that someone payed off some of the refs. to throw this game to the steelers. How else can you explain all of their screwup calls? You can't and it was painfully obvious to all that watched, except for most of the steeler fan's.Even the announcers and some of the honest steeler's fan's couldn't believe how badly the refs. blew (threw) the game.

Anonymous said...

I'm unfortuantly a Detroit Lions fan so there is no bias in my opinoin.  But if this game was not fixed then every ref involved needs to be sent back to HS sports.  It was that BAD!!!  Probably  no...certainly the worst officiated championship game in history.  Just one bad call after the next-  all on Seattle.  It was horrible!  They should all be investigated.  Players catch heat for having off games,  so should officials.  The only thing is I think it was deliberate.

As a True FAN,  that officiating HURT the sport in my opinion.

To be sure, NEITHER team was super and the Hawks have a curious 2-min. strategy. My MVP's? 2nd runner-up: Guy who figured he'd get mugged by Steeler crowd and allowed Ben's TD. 1st runner-up: Guy who called Matt for illegal 'block' on an obvious tackle. Winner: Guy who called 'holding' on completed pass to 1 yd.line. This is too important a contest to make a call which does nothing more than let fans know you are paying attention (sorta).
I'm NOT a fan of either team. I wanted to see a good game. I saw a team get robbed by overzealous officials, who made the worst SB call since XIII when Benny Barnes got called for pass int. against Steelers. Will the refs apologize to the Hawks this week as they did to Dallas after SB XIII?
I like Cowher and preferred to see him win, but not THIS way. And no, I do not think it was intentional; these calls were blown...and they not only severely damaged the Hawks' chances, they ruined the contest.
Sorry for Hawks' fans.

In the 40 years of watching super bowls, this was by far the worst.  Seahawks had this game, what a shame the refs took it from them!!!!  Not to mention the half-time was so horrible.  Everyone I know was expecting something really great for the 40th Super Bowl.  Rolling Stones need to hang it up!

Anonymous said...

Dear Julesnmimi,
Nobody say's that you're blind. You obviously like your team, but this was one of the worst called games I've ever seen.If the Seahawk's had won with the help of the refs awful calls, sure it would still be a win,but it would still be a tarnished win.The Seahawks played better all through the game and I'm not trying to take anything away from the steelers. They had some good play's,but if the refs hadn't made so many obvious to everyone bad calls the steeler's would never have won. They won and I can live with that, but the ref. debate will forever be a black mark on this not so Superbowl.See you next year!!

There have been games where we feel it's a shame someone has to lose. This game made me fearful of a winner. My sympathies lie with the Hawks, who left 3 injured starters on the field, along with a precious time out and a bit of lost composure. To say the Steelers won ugly is an understatement - anyone shows up at my door THAT ugly and I call the cops.
I watched all SBs save 3. This was the worst as far as officiating was concerned. The Hawks, who seemed to actually have a game plan, were repeatedly thwarted by the refs, who, to many Hawks fans, I'm sure, seemed to have their own. While one Hawks receiver did have the bad taste to push-off right in front of an official (I mean, the guy had to call it, no?), some other calls were questionable, like the TD. Others were awful, like the holding penalty, without which, we would have had a game.
Madden and others have said you can call holding on every play. Perhaps. I have two answers. First, in THE game, it's a no-call unless it's flagrant. Second, then why not call one against the other team, too?
There are three teams on the field, and only two should be a factor.

I totally agree. This was without a doubt one of the worst officiating shows of all time. Pass enterference in the end zone with the game on the line? geez, that was hoorible. 3rd and 20 and he converts with half the linemen downfield? yeah, that was huge. Seattle should file a greivance right away. Now, Spitts-burg did do a good job on defense of keeping Seattle out of the end zone, but they had a alot of help. If I were a Seahawks fans I'd be pissed, but I'm not so I'm just shocked. The officiating and Half time show, which I think there shoulda been wheelchairs and at least one Viagra commercial to help us laff at it more, really did stink. This is one superbowl I'll forget real quick. Noone outside the city of Pittsburg thinks this was a good game.

I for one was very disappointed in the officiating of the game.  They mentioned one of the head refs was a retired policeman - thank God for that or this guy would be shooting 12 year olds for stealing a pack of gum!  I don't like either team but could not believe the officials' calls.  First the touchdown that got pulled for what the refs called pushing off?!?!  Come on - what BS.  It was a clean catch and TD.  Then the other calls like the big man #7 TD!  The ball clearly does NOT cross the plane of the endzone line.  Any blind person could see this in the slow mo reply.  Then the blocking call against the SH QB!!!!  What BS.  These refs seemed to be making up new rules as they called them.  Both team played their hearts out and it was a great game.  It would have even been a better game if the refs were unbiased.  Rothy is said to be worth 20 mil now.  I wonder how much the refs are worth now also?  Just what the heck is good about having replay if the refs can't see worth a damn?

Bill Coward will take the win. The refs do not have any honor or integrity. There should be an investigation, but what will that do? My hats off to Seattle organization, they had a very good year and they definately deserved to be at the dance. As far as super bowls goes, this one was the biggest toilet yet and I believe it's time to flush, because it smells bad and there's too much crap from the the refs.

NOT ONLY DID THE REFS RUIN THE GREATEST GAME DAY OF THE YEAR BUT THEY BROUGHT QUESTION TO FAIR OFFICIATING PERIOD. I AM A EAGLES FAN AND EVEN THOUGH PIT. IS IN PA. I REALLY FELT SORRY FOR SEATTLE. I AM NOT SURE THE BEST TEAM ACTUALLY WON.

Anonymous said...

I really wish the refs would not have positioned themselves to be the difference in the game. While I could care less about either team being in the Greatest show on Earth, I feel the viewer audience was robbed of what could have been a really great game. Shame on the NFL for failing to live up to it's hype.

the steelers won the superbowl the during the two previous games.
the refs screwed up the call when seattle should have had a completion,
which would have led to a touchdown. they screwed up again, when
the qb cut the runner down.

both teams played mediocre games. both teams were off.
nobody made the other team bad. they were bad on their own.

most afc people were saying that any of the 4 afc teams could have
won the superbowl. i agree.

I knew this was going to be a really bad super bowl when the majority fans there from Pittsburgh booed a really great quarterback...Tom Brady....the steelers won the game because of the refs and the fans dont deserve the honor of being super bowl champs.....Go Pats...we really need true team champs...not chumps...

I would compare this superbowl XL with the year 2000 president election,; it was a given!  This setup is a sad point in the heritege of what is happening to our country. The one in the same. There was no super in this superbowl. You can see it all around us. If this was a well more open play game, and the outcome was the same. There would not be this big stirup. At least it would be more Honest !

In time itself the truth will find away!  The Seahawks don't loose the Superbowl, it was taken away from them unfaithfully. They are the real winner!
                                     Go Seattle Seahawks

What a sad day, when refs officiate so badly just because football
is big business in the east.  For shame

Anonymous said...

I absolutely think the officating in this game was horrible. Both teams were off to say the least but everyone knew it would be a defensive game.
Some of the calls were horrible and always in Pitt's favor which would lead them to victory. Take away the officating calls or overturn
1. Ben breaking goalline barrier...they might still have gotten a td but he wasn't over and everybody knew it
2. His time out when the play clock ran to zero...please maybe the ref just called it for him
3. The lost seahawk TD in the endzone call was weak and should have been overturned
4. The hassleback tackle call...again very weak
These were just what I could remember but watching the game you could just see that pitt had the officating with them at each moment. Basically Pitt only made two good plays the whole game and that usually doesn't cut it in the premier league.

Take away the officating and Seattle wins by 3 even with the missed field goal.
It is pretty bad when Vegas has a bigger say in the game than the players.

Think about it....

It's to bad that the refs were so unprofessional.. It makes you think long and hard about whether they knew their job was to call a fair and unbiased game... Everyone is talking about it... Just who are these REFS?????? Will we ever see them again????? Lets hope not... KMJMA@aol.com

I wonder if the league is going to invent the following personal foul signal for next superbowl....god knows the refs should have used it in this past one!!  The call is..(and I'll use the Seahawks for this one, but put in any team that get's the bad end of the yellow flag...)

Head Ref:  "Personal Foul -  #12 - Seahawks - Illegally Ruining My Vegas Point Spread - 15 yard penalty and loss of points"

Anonymous said...

i can't beleive that in front of a national audience Big Ben's touchdown was not reversed. Was this official blind? Perhaps he had 7 and 3 in his football pool. That had to be one of the worse calls ever. Does he still have a job? If so why? It is hard for me to beleive that in the biggest game of the year the outcome was affected my bad referees. UNBELEIVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm not a big fan of either team....or the NFL for that matter.  I was still pissed off at the officiating from the Rose Bowl almost a month ago and as soon as they called the Jackson TD offensive interference, I had a bad feeling the ref's were intentionally letting Pitt stay in the game (like Texas was allowed to stay in the game).  At least Texas earned their victory bc officials allowed them to.  I cant say the same for Pitt.

I get sick just thinking about watching another NFL game with refs making obvious calls against another team.  I hope they didn't get paid and if so, they should be fined by the NFL.  Revoking their ref license would be even better!!!

Anonymous said...

Pittsburg was outplayed for the most part.I think Seattle had to feel defeated by the refs by halftime ,maybe Holmgren didnt know what plays to call during the 2 minute drill because everything they did had been flagged.I felt like I was watching the championship game from "REMEMBER THE TITANS".Did anyone check?were all of the refs from Pittsburg,Atlantic City or Vegas?worst by far!

IT WAS A BAG JOB. PITTSBURGH STUNK OUT THE FIELD.  THEY DIDN'T DESERVE TO WIN. THEY NEVER ONCE LOOKED LIKE A CHAMPION TEAM. NOT LIKE THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS. I WAS VER DISAPPOINTED AFTER SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THE GAME. OF COURSE I THINK SEATTLE DESERVED TO WIN. THHEY PLYED A BETTER GAME AND A MORE CLASSY TEAM.

This morning I opened the newspaper to read all about the"fantastic win for the Steelers" I went directly to the statistics of the game to look at one very important stat: the amount of penalties and yards penalized for each team! Interestingly enough, while this stat has always been there for every game I have ever looked up during the season and the playoffs.....it was not posted!!!!! Perhaps the NFL didn't want the fans to see just what a fix this game really was! I am not a fan of either team, (but I am a fan of football), it was so obvious early on that the game was going to be difficult for the Seahawks to win because of the officials. For the Superbowl, one would think that only the finest officials would be chosen.....and yet it seems that either the NFL chose the crew that would call it as the NFL wanted it, (clearly Tagliabu wanted Rooney to win  #5) or these guys are just a pathetic bunch of blind losers that couldn't officiate a Pop Warner game!! I could care less who won, but in the Superbowl, I wanted the teams to be play hard and be able to play the game 11 men and 11 men, NOT 15 and 11!!!  If the NFL has one shred of decency they will apologize to the world for the pathetic display of officiating by their crew and for that horrible halftime show. I agree that there should be further investigation into this matter, it isn't the 1st time sports has been "messed with" for various reasons! If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's pobably a duck! if you are a Steelers fan I am sure you will take the win, but deep in your heart you know that the refs were the worst ever, ..if not, how come none of these ridiculous penalties on the SH's were called against the Steelers? The Steelers will always have this Championship, but it is forever clouded by the scandlous officiating controversy! Any unbiased and reasonable person watching this game has to be sickened by what the Super bowl has been reduced to.

SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

The refs and whoever paid them to throw the game should be ashamed.  The Steelers are indeed, the inferior team if they felt they had to cheat to win.  I think they didn't want to get beaten by the underdog, so they had to win at all costs .  The Hawks camp and their fans should rest assured that absolutely everyone saw through the crap and know that they are the true winners.  Unless honesty is brought back to the officiating and the game is not for sale anymore, the Super Bowl will fade into history because no one will pay to watch a game when the winner is decided before the kickoff!

As a high school basketball official I can usually find a way to justify how an official could see something one way or the other.  In this game though the officials were either incompetent or if their goal was for the Steelers to win they were excellent.  Everyone is talking about the goal line play and the "pass interference" on Jackson.  I discount the goal line play because it was too close to overturn.  No one mentioned how Hines Ward pushed a guys head as he cut out to receive a pass.  The man that was "held" on the Seattle pass play to the two was offsides before not being held!  There were men downfield illegally on both of Pittsburgh's big pass plays.  Al Michaels mentioned Joey Porter's tackle was close to a horse collar?  And in Pittsburgh (Detroit) no time on the play clock is now not 0?  If these were honest mistakes these guys should never do another game in the NFL.  I would love to be in the room when these guys are evaluated.

Can someone, anyone PLEASE tell me when Ben R was "blocked in the back" in this game?  I share an office with a Steelers fan and when I asked him if he didn't think the officiating was a little biased, he said there were lots more calls that should have gone against Seattle but didn't get called.  This block in the back I heard him mention 2-3 times today, but I didn't see it yesterday, and I haven't heard or seen it mentioned in any of the articles or blogs I've read since then.

As for the game, well, the only thing Steelers and their fans care about is the "W" and the trophy.  Seahawks and their fans are screwed because if they complain, they get labeled as whiners and crybabies.  And if they don't complain, they are admitting defeat.

I know who "won".  And I know who played better football, all year.  See you next year.

OK. I am a Seahawks fan. More than that I am a football fan. I watch a lot of football at a lot of different levels of play. I coach football. I love football for the X's and O's, the strategy, etc. Football is a great sport. Unfortunately,I am now questioning whether or not football is fixed. Super Bowl XL had the feel of a big WWF event. The XL logo just contributes to the glitzy and sleazy feel of WWF promotion and profiteering. The Game itself was not perfectly played of course, but then very few Super Bowls live up to the monumental hype. I'm not going to re-hash every blown call by the officials, but one call in particular needs real scrutiny, and that is the Hasselbeck"Chop Block". The fact that the refs added penalty yards to what was so unbeliveably a blown call is truly amazing. Why didn't they just say, "There is no foul on the play"? If I had been Mike Holmgren, I would have taken my team off of the field and refused to play at that point. In watching, playing, and coaching football for 45 years, I have never seen a call like that stand. How is it possible in the Biggest Game? How were these officials chosen? Whose pockets were they in? We need to check what other games this crew called this season and in others past. A review should be done to see if the stench of other atrocities is still left where they have officiated before. They would had to have had a lot of practice to ply their trade before being chosen to perform on the Big Stage.

I am not a Seahawks fan, but am a football fan. I watched my Patriot go down on bad calls, and was appauled when I watched what the black and whites did to the Seahawks in the Stupidbowl! I was extremly angry at what I saw. The Seahawks beat up on the Steelers, but the officals gave the game to the Steelers.  Fans of the Steelers should stand up and tell it like it was, a gimme game. Hang your heads in shame Steeler nation. They took the Pats out of the play offs, and they took the Seahawks out of the SuperBowl. It sickens me when I think about that game, as it should any TRUE fan of football.
I will say that I thought the Steelers might win it, but never thought it would be won that way.  I praise the Seahawks for out playing the Steelers every inch of the way. Even a Steelers fan should have seen THAT!!

I don't care what the scoreboard said. Seattle in every other way won that game. It was by far the worst officiating I've ever witnessed in football. With all but 3 states betting in favor of the Steelers, I wonder how much Vegas would have lost had the outcome been different. I am also wondering if this game was fixed and if anyone is going to investigate the refs. It seems almost impossible that many bad calls could be made in one game. If I were a steeler fan I don't think I'd be celebrating, I'd be embarassed for the way they won.

Its the NFL MERCHANDISE BABY!! Pittsburgh NFL merchandise ranks in the top 5 with the Cowboys, Redskins...etc.  It was worth ALOT of money to NFL properties that Pittsburgh won..Not Seattle... We be talking millions more. AND...who pays the Refs?? The NFL..
Case in point ref the mercenary NFL... It was more important to change the ball on every play (a new one each time) versus allowing the qb to have a throwable non-slick ball like in the regular season. The balls will be sold at HUGE prices as authentic game balls...albeit one play only..

I'm not a fan of either team, but it was obvious that the officials were either paid off by Vegas or just plan HORRIBLE.  The NFL has got to respond to the fans' concerns and investigate or at the very least, APOLOGIZE!  I have to admit that the NFL has left a sour taste in my mouth after the the departure of 2 teams from L.A. and no expansion replacements in the near future, as well as blocking all teams from relocating here (remember the Seahawks almost-move?)  But this is the final straw!  The Super Bowl was a bust, the game was fixed, the half time show sucked (bury the Stones, man! They are sooooo old and over!)  I'm done with the NFL and I am sure that many fans out there are done, too!  Bring on college football 2006!

If the ref's are going to be paid off for the next wwf bowl then maybe they should make some attempt at not making it so obvious!! Let the teams play or call it for both sides!! Pit had at least 7 clear holds that were not called, a horse collar tackle on Alexander that wasn't called and most of all the gift touch down for pit.

There is no question that Seattle still had plenty of opportunities to over come these calls, and looked impatient on critical drives late.

As a fan of football for 30+ years All I want to see is what the Teams have on Sunday, If this is going to continue then this sport will suffer!

With 52 Postings before me, I think It has all been said. It's VERY obvious the ref's were paid. I've been a NFL fan from day one (ain't tellin how old I am), and know what? They ought to change it to NFL/WWF. It's getting as lousy as the WWF. If the NFL doesn't investigate the officiating for this one, then I'm not sure I'll pay much attention next year. Won't make any difference tho, PT Barnum said it years ago, "There's a sucker born every minit". There always will be suckers to watch the likes of what we saw Sunday night.

SUPER BOWL? NO IT SHOULD BE REFERRED TO AS "SUPER FOOL SUNDAY" FROM NOW ON . IF THE GAME HAS TO BE SUCH A LAS VEGAS GAMBLE - WITH THE PLANNED WINS  AND THE OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE HALF TIME SHOW, THEN KICK THE GREAT TEAMS (SEAHAWKS AND OTHER RIGHTFULLY TALENTED TEAMS) OUT, AND REPLACE THEM WITH DANCERS AND ANIMALS FIGHTING FOR THAT TROPHY ! THEN WE'LL SEE HOW THOSE REFS AND HIGH  STAKE GAMBLERS PULL OFF THIS SO CALLED 'MONEY GAME' .  NOW WE ALL KNOW- IF YOU'RE BULLIED AROUND,  YOU CAVE IN.   SEAHAWKS RULE !!!!!!!....LIKE IT OR NOT !!   LOVE YOU GUYS!  SEE YA NEXT YEAR .

I'd hate to call this the worst Super Bowl ever, there is still plenty of room to make next year even worse. I have a great deal of respect for the Steelers organization. They *might* have been able to win a fairly called game, but as it was neither team had the chance to prove that they were the best. The NFL won't care if a game is fair or not as long as the money keeps coming in. Maybe we should be sending our feedback to the advertisers instead. No advertisers equals no real revenue for the NFL.
As far as the halftime show goes... I know a guy that lives in a group home because he's "special"... He does a much better rendition of "Satisfaction" than the Stones did.

I am a panther fan and Seattle beat them to go to the suckbowl of all time,I didnt care who won until i seen all the refs bad calls and i must say refs was paid and if the NFL is going to let stuff like that go on and not let the teams really play the way it use to be them just STOP GOING TO NFL games and STOP buying anything to do with the NFL and show them, who ever runs the NFL and let this happen was the far worst thing that they could have done for the biggest game of the year,NFL i have always respected your sport but after seeing this suck bowl i must say thank god for nascar, you dont have paid off refs to blow a nascar race....seattle should have won that game easy from the begging to the end but its to hard to play against bs calls that turns everything you do good to bad and calls that shouldnt have even been made and NFL you got to thank god i have no clue how to sue your asses for paying off a game because of use all betting on it and you didnt want to lose your asses so after this game that was the suckbowl, you are now just like the wwe, i have no doubt your refs are paid and told what team to make sure wins so nfl you lost alot of fans this year and you are really stupid as hell for doing such a thing, aleast you should have told the refs not to make it look to avestest and if you did tell them that then they suck at that to....this is one nfl fan that now doesnt even want to see a nfl game or hear of one so nfl can drop dead and bring on nascar all year long, atleast thats not rigged...

sry nfl you suck in all things but 1, atleast you are smart anough to have each team have pretty cheerleaders but they arnt evn shown on tv that much anyways so i promise ill never buy anything else from the nfl and i have already thrown everything o owned from the nfl away.....you suck when you let the biggest game of the year get played that way.... SEATTLE WON THAT GAME in my heart

Had it not been for Garo Yepremian's flash of creativity, SB VII would have been the most boring of all. Two so called boring games were VI and IX, but the boredom was justified in that the two victors, the Cowboys and Steelers repsectively, totally dominated. While it's true Staubach only passed for 119 yards, it is because the 'Boys rushed for 252 whilst eating the clock. The Steelers promoted boredom by not letting the Vikings --a team which could never figure out what to do in the SB-- do anything on offense.

SB V might be considered for worst status due to all the turnovers and two strange plays, the first being a twice touched pass which ended up in the arms of John Mackey while in full stride. Nobody is known to have tackled Mackey while in full stride, so he raced 75 yards for a TD. The other odd play was the ball whcih was alternately fumbled by both teams as they pursued it out  of the end zone, which, after all the screaming and spilled beer, resulted in a touchback for Dallas.
The turnovers? Well, I think if you could review the entire game you will see some of the hardest hitting ever. Besides, unlike the first four, this game remained up for grabs until the end.

Could the worst have been XX? When the Pats abandoned their game plan after the opening kickoff? Or the ones where Denver need not have bothered showing up? Or the Ravens scrimmage against the Giants?

I think not, for those games were boring because one team WAS super. This game was different. While the Steelers were adept enough to take advantage of Seattle's strange choice of plays, they also took advantage of some blown calls...not just bad calls, but at the most inopportune times (for Seattle).

What made this the worst SB of all was the combination of Seattle's inept play calling and the unrestrained creativity of the officials, which resulted in a victor which need not have been super.

All this bullshit and it is BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did the refs miss 2 field goals? Did they throw the int. on a touchdown drive? Did the Refs miss manage the clock twice? How about "Hands of Stone Stevens" their fault too? It seems in the last couple of years it became the in thing to blame someone else (refs) for a loss. I agree some calls & non calls (both ways) were questionable, but the Steelers WON the game & the Seahawks LOST it!!!!!!!!!!! End of story.

Ok I am a steeler fan and have been for 30 years but I am going to try to be partial...First and formost for everyone whining about Bens touchdown..get the hell over it..no one and I mean no one can honestly sit down and say that he did or did not cross the PLAIN of the goal line with that ball... the ref calls a touchdown..and per any other game inside of 2 minutes...the BOOTH review the play ...no clear evidence that he did not cross the plain..that means the play stood... TOUCHDOWN..
On the push off in the endzone...9 out of 10 times it would have been called..but think about it the receiver did it RIGHT in FRONT of the ref...bad call? maybe but the rules say you cant do it..if the receiver had half a brain he would have just made his cut and the results would have been the same..or think of it this way Seattle fans if a defender would have done the same thing to the reciever what would have been the call?????
You seem to forget that big Ben was clearly hit in the back on the INT but no flag was thrown...how about the catch and fumble seattle made prior to the half that the steelers picked up but it was ruled incompleate?
Instead of blaiming everyone else think about this..Your big time punter couldn't drop a punt inside of the 10 if his life depended on it...your clock management in a word...sucked...and it seemed like no one on your side could catch or when they did they were out of bounds...
This game will not go down as one of the great super bowls...not even as one of the best..but it was a super bowl none the less and two very good teams made it to the dance but neither danced very well...

Kudos to the refs who got it right , no I am not a Steelers fan I am a Ravens fan and I hate the Steelers. But I watched the game and cringed as the Seahawks blew the first half, it should have been 24 - 0 at halftime instead they were down 7-3. The seahawks could not catch and that was the difference in this game. I hear TO is still available, Seattle might want to add someone that can catch to their roster.

Seattle did not play their best game of the year, but the Steelers were worse.  They stunk up the place.  You can't tell me that if the refs had made the same calls against Pittsburgh, that the Steelers fans would be in hyper-whine.  It was not that great of a game, but it had to be the worst officiated Super Bowl of all time.  It must have been lonely in Clowntown on Sunday, because they had all the Bozo's in Detriot wearing striped shirts.

The odds at the start of the season were 40-1 against Seatle winning XL. Does anyone out there, (Seatle, Pittsburgh, or in between) honestly beleive that the bookies in Vegas were going to allow that kind of payout???
With that in mind, give Pittsburgh a break. They played a fair game, the players did not cheat, nor did they play dirty. From the ownership, to the coaches, to the players they played with and showed nothing but class.
As for Seatle, its hard to complain, or even get people to pay attention to your complaints when you did nothing to help your own cause. The clock management was the worst I have ever seen, perhaps someone on Seatle's sideline was on the Vegas payroll?
All and all, the winner was VEGAS, and the losers were the FANS. The blame goes to the NFL, and that sums it up.

And for the record I'm a BROWNS fan.

It was a great Super bowl and kudos to the City of Detroit. My visit to Detroit for all the festivities and the NFL experience were just simply awsome, we had an awsome time.

As far as the game, you can blame the ref's all you want, Seattle had all the opportunities to make the big plays. I dont think the Steelers played their best game, they looked so conservative and very nervous, definetly not the team we saw win three straight road playoffs games. The Steelers made all the big plays to pull off the victory.

Anonymous said...

Oh yea...you want to blame the ref's....what about the blunderous piss poor clock management by coach Holgrem at the end of the first half and at the end of the game, the several dropped passes by seattle, Lets talk about those calls sports fans...Oh my, how we forgot that.
Its easy to blame the ref's....those players and the plays happen do damn fast it has to be hard as hell to make those split second calls. Most of those calls were very close, but as its been explained 8 billion times in the last two days on most sports talk radio networks....they were within the rules. I'm not a Steelers fan, they made the plays (3 big ones) and deserved the ring.

Go Lions 2006...LOL ;)

47,000 people can't be wrong!  The SBL instant poll asked the question, "Why did Pittsburgh win the Super Bowl?" and 46, 965 (as of 1500 PST), or 55% of the 85,000-plus who responded, answered "Referees."

Looking at the forest rather than the trees, this game HAD to be fixed.  Someone with an interest in Pittsburgh prevailing (hint: Vegas line...Seahawks to win the Super Bowl, 40-1 against at the start of the season) was pulling the strings.

Point 1) If the officiating had been merely incompetent, then the bad and missed calls would have been equally distributed.  The Seahawks had twice as many total penalties as the Steelers, and 100 PERCENT of the bad calls on critical plays went against them, including a touchdown called back (off a bogus offensive pass interference call), a long gain to the 1-yard line nullified by a bogus holding call, and the weirdest one of all, Hasselbeck's 15-yarder for "blocking below the waist" for tackling the guy who had just intercepted his pass.

Point 2) Pittsburgh was awarded a touchdown even Roethlisberger admits wasn't a touchdown.  Pittsburgh ran the play clock out and didn't get a delay of game penalty.  Pittsburgh used a "horse collar" tackle on Sean Alexander right in front of the ref and didn't get called for it.  Pittsburgh hit Bobby Engram after he stepped out of bounds after a pass reception...again, no call.

Point 3) Never before in the 39-game history of the Super Bowl had any team won the "trifecta" -- winning total yards (even though Seattle lost over 100 yards to the referees), time of possession, and turnovers (Seattle was +1) and still lost the game.

So what are the chances that all of the above could be an "accident"?  10,000 to 1?Anyone else watch the same game I did?

I would like to see an investigation -  Someone needs to be held accountable for this crime.   I am not a fan of either team.  I like Indianapolis.  I just wanted to watch a good game and would have liked to seen the game decided by the teams involved not the refs.  I turned the channel in the third quarter sponsors.

Anonymous said...

I think there should be an investigation.  This was by far the most blatantly paid off Superbowl oops I mean Vegas Bowl I have seen.  The very fact that they didn't even have 50/50 merchjandise for both teams at Ford Field let alone the commercials that showed Stealers with the trophy made it blatantly obvious that the hawks weren't in a fair game.  I'm a big Colts fan but even I had to admit the Seahawks were robbed.  if thats the way the NFL runs there Superbowl -oops VEGAS BOWL- why tune in and watch.  Those Refs should be fined or fired.  The NFL owes the fans of football teams everywhere an apology for letting such a mockery of sportsmanship happen.

whenever someone finds themselves on the loosing end of a game they always look to blame someone other than their own team.the seahawks shot themselves in the foot (dropped passes, poor clock management...) but blame the refs if it makes you feel better,it still doesn't change the fact that the Steelers are the WORLD CHAMPS!!!!!get over it and hope your team goes to the superbowl next year and does better than they did this year.oh and by the way,if you DO think the refs were paid, stop badmouthing Pittsburgh, the team, coaches,or fans.the reason there were so many burgh fans at the game is because the STEELERS have been, are, and always will be a great organization, with dedicated players and die hard fans and people all over this great country realize that!(IX,X,XIII,XIV&XL)

Was This The Worst Super Bowl Ever??? : Most definitely!!!  I've always been a fan of the Super Bowl... it's always been a great time.  This one was not.  I feel so ..... ripped off.  This was not a game that decided the #1 team.  I hate to say it, b/c I'm not the type to be a "conspiracy theorist", but this was obviously rigged.  It HAD to be.  Sports Ill magazine had Super Bowl paraphenalia for Pitt prior to the game, but not the Seahawks??  What's up with that??  Why did they even play?  They should have just handed the trophy to the Steelers to begin with.  This game did not decide the true winner.  We don't know who that team is.  Honestly.  Had the refs let them play... we would.  Sure... Steelers made some big plays.  2 of them.  One of which happened to be after some BS holding call against Seattle that would have, more than likely, ended up in a TD.  Yeah.... Seahawks made some really bad decisions and dropped a few catches....that's a given, no one is arguing this point.  However, Steelers did not play the better game on this day.  Whether Ben made it in or not is a moot point, they probably would have gotten in on the next play.  Actually..... the point is... EVERYONE should be disappointed in this "Super Bowl".  Steeler fans should be as well.  Wouldn't you like to know who won an actual "fair fight"???  We, as fans, were robbed.... pure and simple.  Letters should be written.... possible boycots???  The NFL has to know that we will not stand for this type of crap!!  I WANT MY SUPER BOWL!!

Why does everyone complain about the officiating only in this game? Was I the only person watching the Indy game, or did anyone see how bad it was then? The steelers made it through that, so why couldn't the Hawks. They had their chances just like everyone else. Why doesn't everyone stop complaining about the calls and give the Steelers some credit for all that they have accomplished this year. People wrote them off by week 6, and look what they did just to make it to the playoffs, let alone win the super bowl. Don't compl;ain about the officiating when the call is still debatable even on the video replay, I'd like to see you get in the game and try to make all the right calls all you armchair referees. Give the Steelers some credit, they earned the Lombardi trophy this year, and there's always next year for your teams that didn't do so well.

Absolutely outstanding!!!!!! But, to preserve the meaning and value of this Super Bowl win to an outstanding franchise, and an outstanding fandom, we've got to ignore the "ESPN-bred naysayers". Boy, are they all over this one because they missed out on their sweethearts: Both Brady and P. Manning eliminated, then the next echelon of Cincinnati and Denver eliminated. They just weren't ready to accept the beauty of the STEELERS in the Super Bowl!!! Keep the faith!! B&N

Referees took the Momentum from the SeaHawks in the first half. Score would have been at half time 10 to 0- SeaHawks over Stealers.

Jackson Touchdown was a great clean touchdown. Madden is no longer the best caller of a game. He is a crook,  just like the referee.

SeaHawks would have probably won the game 17 to 14 or more, even with the missed field goals.

With so much bias, and anti Seahawks, how can our children grow up to play fair.

Impossible by not improbable that the ref was crooked.

That's why guys like JStevens should not have run his mouth. He could have had 3 touchdowns dispite the crookery.

Joe Porter, Bettis, and Big Ben including Polamulo were a lousy. Thanks to earlier Seahawks offense and defense, and the Big Ben's two plays one with Randel El that led to Hines W... mvp.

Indy, Denver, Patriots, Redskins, Bears, Carolina, are all waiting for next year.

Take courage Seahawks - don't depend on the ref. They give, take & gamble games with crookery.

Play against all odds in the future.

The Hummer superbowl add was a touchdown just like Jacksons from Hasselbeck. Bens ball never left his heart because the hot Seahawks defense had stopped Jerome Bettis twice.

Ok...

Seahawks should have still won the game. Hasselbeck intercepted throw had two men open on the right side 20 feet from the end zone.

Fact is anyone who has so much to say about the calls were not Steeler Fans, and did not watch objectively. Fact Rothlisberger did cross the goal line in the air and was knocked back past the line. (Forward Progess)  ever hear of it, he did not have to land in the end zone, just pass any portion of the line at any point.
The pass interference call in the end zone( Wake up and watch a replay Jackson damn near knocked the Steeler defensive player backwards (right in front of the official I might add)  There were bad calls on both teams, but like someone else said missed field goals were not the officials fault, all the dropped passes were not the officials fault.  Poor time management was not the fault of the officials.  Fact is the Seahawks were just not prepared to play the game.  Go Steelers~!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

The game itself was one of the most boring I have ever watched.  The quality of play was low -- dropped passes, mental mistakes, screwed up 2 minute drill(s), etc. -- the only thing worse was the quality of the officiating.  This had to be one of the worst called Super Bowls ever!  I was pulling for Pittsburgh until the officiating got so unbelievably lopsided for the Steelers.  I can understand why Holmgren said he had to play against the officials too.

Anonymous said...

So basically, the Seattle fans are upset about a hold call on a hold, a push call on a push, and a called TD on a play where the ball crossed the goal line ... The 12th man was there for Seattle, we just had numbers 13 - 70,000 ...

Pittsburg probably would have won the game dispite the bad calls.Seattle still had alot of missed chances.Theirself to blame.Officials did stink. It really was not a great super bowl. The super bowl only seems great if your team wins.

Sure get's old reading all the BS about the Steelers paying off the refs. We lose great players all the time because we don't have the payroll to keep them on, but everyone seems to think we payed the refs?  What a joke. I'm a huge steeler fan and they totally deserved to be in the Super Bowl. They had a tough road to travel and some not so good calls (one almost costing them the game) against them along the way. It happens, GET OVER IT !!!   I can't understand blaming the teams when the ref's screw up their job. Just because they made bad calls is no reason to take it out on a team. I've definitely seen the Steelers play much better, but obviously they played well enough to win. I love the post that called all you complainers amrchair refs. How totally true, as If any of you could do better. THANK YOU STEELERS FOR AN AWESOME SEASON !!!  WE LOVE YOU BLACK AND GOLD !!!!

Anonymous said...

What I don't understand is why everyone is saying Seattle got all of the bad calls.  Let's look at the "2" legitimate fumbles the seahawks made and Pittsburgh recovered that the refs denied.  The bad calls went both ways and could have made the game a Pittsburgh blowout if these plays were left as true fumbles.  I mean how much of a "football" move does Jeremy Stevens need to make besides a catch turn and step before it is called a catch.  Seattle and everyone else just needs to deal with the fact that the better team won and that's that!!!!

From a die hard Browns fan. I was expecting the Steelers to play a good game. All I saw was terrible officiating and a little luck on the side of the Steelers.

It all boils down to this, the Steelers made just few enough mistakes to stay in the game.

They played much better games in Cincinatti, Indianapolis and Denver.

Although we all still wonder had Carson Palmer not been injured what would have happened. Most likely an end to the Steelers season.

I guess when all the dust clears we can all wait for the draft and then for the Pre-Season.

I am a 54 year old Steeler fan, but not a diehard.  I enjoy football for alot of reasons.  Each play is like a chess match between 22 players on the field and the schemes of their coaches.  Each play has so many potential outcomes.  Played by best young players this country can offer.  All at different stages of their football careers.  Big Ben is 23 and learning, the Bus at the end(thanks for it all).  I didn't know a whole lot about the Seahawks until these last few weeks.  I was impressed by Shaun and Matt as people.  They are class.  Watching the game I was impressed by the speed of the Seahawk's defense and the protection of the offensive line.  In my heart I feel the two best teams played in the Super Bowl.  The NFL needs to train the refs better.  It sure took away from the game.  I love the Steelers and I think they were the slightly better team even with the bad calls against the Hawks.  I am sure they feel they have the better team.  To me they are both winners.

I have not read a more accurate report on the game!!! The Sport Assassin is right on!!! The NFL will have ablack eye from this game that will last a long time!!I have myself have never seen a poorer officiating then this one!! Many have mentioned the bad holding call, offensive pass interference, the Pittsburgh sneak that never scored, but the timeout call by Pittsburgh was laughable!! There should be an investigation into the officiating, and the NFL should step up to the plate and be held accountable!!! Right on sportzassassin!!!The NFL better do the right thing and not fine Coach Holmgren for honest and percise remarks about the officiating!!

They should have just give the trophy to the steelers and told the seahawks to stay home. Why have instant replay when its like a blind man trying to make a decision. I always wondered if the refs were paid off for big money and now I no longer wonder. This was with out a doubt in my mind the absolute worst officiated super bowl game ever. Even the half time show was a joke.

YES!  The Super Bowl was boring.  It started off with a horrible rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (I don't know why some singers have to screw around with the tune.  It should be sung STRAIGHT without embellishments).  It was downhill from there with officiating from hell.

Anonymous said...

Let's remember they did not beat Cincinnati with ease.  It required careful planning and calculation on their part to get Carson Palmer out of the game.  I have never been so horrified and appalled to see the Steelers jumping up and down, clapping and doing high fives when they took out Palmer.  They knew what they had to do to win that night...the ease of it was they are dirty players with no conscience and they didn't mind possibly ending the career of a remarkable player.  Big Ben chokes in every big game..his stats are awful!  So yes, we all wonder what might have been had Carson remained healthy that evening.  WHO-DEY BABEEEEE>>>you're right...next year.
Pittsburgh sucks!

This Super Bowl was horrible. In stead if having the NFL jail birds calling the game, they should have high school referee calling the game. In my opinion they would of called a better game. You probably won't even have to pay them, they just enjoy being there. I lost interest of the game when Seattle was called for offensive pass interference on there touch down. I only watch the commercials and gave up on the grand Super Bowl.

I would feel better about the officials if I KNEW they where paid off.  Better crooked than plain bad.  Then they may have been confused about thier uniforms being black, white, and gold like Pittsburg's, just goes to show winning takes a team effort.  The NFL has had this problem and it's worse every year.  It was just a matter of time before the spotlight was on the striped shirts in the big game.  And Yes this was the worst SB

One thing I noticed was the NFL commercial showing players with the trophy mostly seemed to be steelers players/coach and not so much the seahawks. That in itself made me feel thet the game was already predetermined in some way.

BAD OFFICIATING!  THAT IS FUNNY!  WERE THERE SOME BAD CALLS. YES!  THERE WAS A HOLDING CALL THAT SUCKED.  BUT THE TOUCHDOWN THAT WAS CALLED BACK WAS A SIMPLE CALL.  IF YOU HAVE YOUR ELBOW AT AN ANGLE, IT ISN'T A PENALTY.  IF IT IS STRAIGHT, YOU ARE PUSHING OFF!  IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT SOME OF THESE CRY BABY RECEIVERS GET THE FLAG INSTEAD OF THE DEFENSE.  A DEFENSIVE PLAYER GETS CALLED IF HE BREATHES TOO HARD ON A RECEIVER.  AND AS FAR AS THE STEELERS ARE CONCERNED, LET'S TAKE YOU BACK TO JANUARY 15TH VERSUS THE COLTS.  I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WORSE OFFICIATED GAME.  BUT GUESS WHAT?  THE STEELERS STILL WON!  THE SIGN OF A TRUE CHAMP!  NOW EVERYONE CAN GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AND FIGURE OUT WHO IS GOING TO COME INTO SECOND PLACE NEXT YEAR AGAISNT THE STEELERS!  CRY AWAY!!!!  STEELER NATION IS BACK IN THE SADDLE!

To tui234,  exactly what game were you watching when you say the Steelers were jumping up and down after Palmer went out.  As a football fan in general, I am appalled you would say something like that  and as a member of the Steelers Nation, I think you are plain making up something that you never saw. Stop your whining.  Yes the refrees weren't at the top of their game, but can you say that they were calling a good game in Indianapolis?  Hell, the head of the NFL referees even issued a statement about missed call on the interception.  Regardless, the Steelers won, suck it up and stop making up stories about the Black and Gold.

Anonymous said...

Yes it was the worst ever !!!

I Have seen them all from # 3 on. I think of the super bowl as a ruff and tumble game, the hardest hitting of the year. This game was over controlled by the officials to the point it seemed like they were playing flag football.

The NFL response is such that we the fans don’t know or understand what we are watching. I feel bad for Steelers that their win will be remembered this way.

hey tui 234,if the o-line would have done its job palmer wouldn't have got hit! by the way, watch the replay,it was one of the bengals lineman that pushed kimo into that mediocre QB. i cant believe you're still crying because you guys choked in the playoffs.WE DEY WE DEY WE DEY that took the AFC and the superbowl.Get over it and quit whining!

I didn't have a dog in this fight....but as a long time pro football fan I have to say that it was by far the worst officiating ever in a Super Bowl.  Anyone who follows the game knows that when the side judge starts running in with ONE HAND up it means that he is ready to spot the ball.  The sudden change to a touchdown signal when the QB is already on the ground and crawling over the line is just nonsense!!!  The fact that the bad call wasn't overturned was just criminal!!  Add to that (1) The "hand check" offensive pass interference that negated the first touchdown, (2) the "phantom holding call" that negated a first down on the one yard line, and (3) the "no-block, low block" were sooooo outlandish that one could only conclude that the fix was in so Jerome Bettis could have the "feel good story, fairy tale ending" to his career!!!!!!!!!  Looks like the NFL is trying to compete with "professional wrestling " now.  Thank God for college football!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

2006 the year of the officials.  From blown calls in college bowl games, to terrible playoff calls, and even worse calls in super bowl.  But who cares the refs have been blowing games since they have had the little yellow flag. I am not a fan of any professional team; I am just a fan of the game.  Steelers’ fans thank the refs for the win; Seahawks’ fans blame the refs for the loss.  Either way you go about it the game is over.  Deal with it; Steelers yes your team probably only won because of poor officiating.  But then again Seahawks it’s not like you were having a stellar game.  Both teams had amazing seasons, neither team seemed prepared to play in a championship game.  The MVP should have went to Madden for pointing out good calls and bad calls, it help everyone know what to complain about and what not to. To everyone outside of Pittsburgh and Seattle the game will be forgotten by the end of the winter Olympics.  And there will be something new for some fan somewhere to complain about.  Good job refs, umpires, and judges keep up the good work.  And good luck to both outstanding teams for next years season.

as a member of the steeler nation  im accustomed to hearing these type
of excuses from the losing team. so what if the steelers put a dirty hit on
carson palmer.....it was damn effective. the steelers have always capatalized
on being the sentimental favorites with a little help from our zebra friends.
maybe if your coach whined enough, linemen held enough and receivers
cried for interference on every pass play you would be where we are instead
of obsessing about 8 or 9 calls that go against your team. when your entire
life hinges on what happens on sunday afternoons and monday nights maybe
youll understand what being a steeler fan is all about.

Are u kidding me. Fans of all teams want exactly what you want. They want their team to win and they feel just a little bit bad when they do otherwise. As a serious fan of football and a DALLAS COWBOY UNTIL I DIE!!!!!!! I can really respect the road it took for the Steeler to get to the championship game...however..... you would have to have had on blinders to not see the one sided calls made in a game of this magnitutude. The Seahawks could not get a call including having their touchdown call back while the Steelers fantom touchdown was held up even under review when the entire television audience could see that the ball never crossed the plane.  Calls like these make a HUGE difference in momentum. Congratulation Steelers you are the world champions. But in the mist of it all you have to smell the stink of winning unders such suspect circumstance.

To pimwa4 and crlyblnd...we have been season ticket holders since 1980 and believe me we Bengal fans have had enough crying years to last us a lifetime.  Steelers are nasty players no matter how you cut it.  Not only have I watched and rewatched the tape..I was there and it happened right in front of us.  Believe me when I say the Steeler team and the terrible towels were going with a vengeance when Kimo took Palmer out.  Yes, Steinback missed his block but Kimo had plenty of time to hit any other way than a helmet to the knee while holding fast and furiously to his ankle and foot.  If you Steeler fans can get off with a Super Bowl that NO ONE thinks you deserve except yourselves...have at it!  Me?  Football is over and I just watched the most ridiculous game of all.  You can take Worthlessburger and his cronies if you wish...I'm sticking with my Bengals.  WHO-DEY!!  We still beat you on your own turf.  Here we go Bengals, here we go!

I imagine perhaps some people have seen all 40 Superbowls, but I haven't, so I am hardly one to answer this question.  But I agree neither team played very well.  Pittsburgh looked like just another mediocre team of the kind Seattle faced and defeated all during their regular season, both at home and away.  But Seattle...!!!

They have faced adversity before and have recovered enough to win despite it.  That quality is what helped them beat the Redskins despite losing Shaun Alexander in the first quarter, and later win the NFC championship.  And all season they have been known as a team to make very few penalties.  So two strange things happened to Seattle at once.  One, they didn't play their best (my personal opinion is they were rattled by the bad calls), and two--they received penalty after penalty--and on what seemed like all their critical plays, which I think killed their momentum.

I have seen perhaps 8 Superbowls in my life.  I usually expect to see great football when I turn on the Superbowl.  I did not.  I usually expect to see a lot of highlights focused on both teams close to equally and I did not--mostly the commercials and highlights featured the Steelers.   I expect to see a fair game on a level playing field, and with a great half-time show.  Again, I did not.

So yes, of the small number of Superbowls I have seen in my life, this was by far the worst.

Just a reminder of the bad calls..

Ticky tack offensive foul on Jackson, that wasn't going to be called, until the defender threw a fit.

Holding call on Locklear, when the replay showed it wasn't holding....and there was at least one Steeler offsides on the same play. The offsides should have been called before any holding call(if there was a holding call)

The Touchdown by ( I believe it was Jackson) that was called no good, when he clearly had one foot in bounds and the other foot hit the pylon, which means it should have been a touchdown.

And the one play by the Steelers that shouldn't have been good, was the 3rd and 28 play where Ben found Hines Ward inside the 5 yard line...there were at least 2 offensive linemen 5 to 10 yards downfield which should have negated that play.

Now how many bad calls can the Steelers fans say were called on them??

Thanks,
a fan of The New York Giants.

I am neither for the seahawks  or steelers. I think that the NFL needs to just let them play football like they used to years ago.  These players should already know in advance that they may possibly get hurt during a tackle whether it be above the knee or below the knee.
All of the penalties called anymore are RIDICULOUS.  I had seen my son's flag football game officiated better. I have always watched the super bowl games whether my team was in it or not.  And I can honestly say, that the officiators either need to get their eyes checked or quits accepting bribes. This years game was the WORST game ever. Many of my friends are steeler fans.  And as they said to me "sure there were bads calls, but we'll take the win either way". I believe that the NFL should do a lot of investigating into this years so called "Super Bowl". In my opinion it was a "SUPER SUCKY GAME". And as for the National Anthem, it should not be aloud to be sung any other way except for the way it was written. Even the have time stunk. Best part of the ENTIRE GAME was the commercials.

I cannot believe the amount of whining, finger pointing, "consipiracy theory", referee this and referee that comments still floating around nearly four days after the game is over.  What in anyone's right mind is it going to matter whether or not the officials called a bad game, Pittsburgh played dirty, or Seattle just plain choked.  The fact of the matter is that s*** happens.  If you've ever played competitive sports of any kind, you'll realize that sometimes you get the calls and sometimes you don't.  In the span of a season, career, etc. they all eventually even out.  People who criticize officiating should put their money where their mouths are...try officiating yourself and see if you can make every call right, day in and day out.  It's not an easy task.  Where the calls questionable? You betcha.  But what are you going to do about it now?  Get on with your lives, people!!!

i don't know if this was the worst superbowl ever but it was one of the worst i've ever seen. i am a big broncos fan so i was obviously pulling for the seahawks.  i will be the first to admit that in the afc championship the steelers played better and they actually deserved to win. the broncos played horrible and the steelers were a better team that day, even though i was disappointed i felt the steelers earned that win and the other wins they had in the playoffs(maybe not the bengals game that was cheap hit even if it was legal which it actually wasn't) but this game they did not deserve to win.  they stole the game from a better but not as popular team.  the seahawks played better.  2 lucky ass plays and some very very crappy calls should not win you the superbowl.  being a better team should and the steelers were not.  everyone should feel cheated especially seahawks players and fans.  i will admit the the seahawks did miss many oportunities but it's hard to make up for those missed opportunities when you're getting B.S. calls called against you all game long.  in conclusion i know and i'm sure everyone here complaining knows that nothing is gonna change this ridiculous outcome but it is good to vent your anger.  maybe if the broncos had played a better game a couple weeks ago we would have gotten  a fair game because no one would care if jerome bettis finished his career in his hometown by winning the superbowl.  i think i like bettis but if he wanted the superbowl enough to think this is ligitiamate(sp?) then he is not the man i thought he was.  if he is not outraged at how this went down then he is no better then those horrible refs.

Lets see.....Stevens fumble....no wait. Ruled not a fumble when it clearly was. Hasselback fumble... no wait he was touched by a Steelers player then he took 2 steps falls to the ground and fumbles with nobody around him. Down by contact....right. The holding call. Look at the guy holding Casey Hampton in the middle of the line on the very same play. Seattle got some gifts from the Refs also. The touchdown....it's not where the ball ends up people!! The nose of the ball was over the goal when Ben was 3 feet or so above the goal line. All the ball has to do is break the plane.  Poor clock management, 2 missed field goals, How many dropped balls?? Unable to stop Hines Ward, I think all of these things helped Seattle lose the game.  Pittsburgh won the game. Get over it Seattle.

Anonymous said...

I don't think this was the worst Superbowl ever, hell at least it wasn't a blowout!  Also, perhaps this wasn't the same Steeler team everone saw battling through the playoffs, but they deserved to be there (Sorry cry-babies Bengal fans), the bottom line is both teams got bad calls to their advantage.  And as far as Big Bens questionalbe touchdown, lets say he didn't break the plain of the goal line ( cuz thats all one has to do is break it, not cross it ), it was only third down and they would have given to the Bus and he would have pounded it through anyway.  I've been a Steeler Fan since 1975, and I think they are the XL Champs.  Wait till next season
GO STEELERS!!!

Seattle didn't play good with all the penalties and not getting the ball past the fuckin 30 yard line more than like 3 or 4 times. Pittsburgh played better and won thats what happens. If Seattle were smart they would have given the ball to Alexander more and he probably had a TD. Stop Bitchin about Darrel Jacksons push because if u get any momentum off of the defender what so ever its offensive pass interference.

As much as we may be from PA, and the glory of the win is cool to have: the disgust of the officiating hit hard on my 15 year old football fan.  I was amazed at the officiating, figured that there was something that the officials knew more than I; but just come to feel that someone made more money from bets or something else if the officials helped the game results show as they have.  Worst Super Bowl ever?  I have never seen such poor officiating in my years of watching televised football, Super bowl or not.

Anonymous said...

The officiating was so bad, that it leads to conspiracy theories.  Would the powers that be want a small market out of the way seattle team to start a dynasty or would they want a traditional pittsburgh team with it's legions of fans nationwide to win.  But multiple bad calls when seattle had the momentum at the end of the 3rd quarter and start of the 4th, the holding that wasn't and subsequent illegal block trying to tackle. amounted to a 14 point swing in the game and broke the hearts and spirit of the seahawks.  I follow both teams and mostly follow the Titans.  But those calls didn't appear accidental.  The NFL's defense of the officiating was reprehensible and bordering on moronic.  My only defense to this lack of credibility is to refuse to spend my dollars on NFL product.  No more Titans tickets, No Jerseys, pullovers etc, etc,  College Football, Basketball,  televised poker tourney's etc.  There is other quality product out there.  And without integrity in the NFL game, there is no quality there.

This was by far the best super bowl in current history, two good teams mixed
it up, and the best team won, but it wasn't a blow out.  The ref's called a good
game, it's the people that don't understand the rules that were offended by their
calls.  If there would have been less hype surrounding the game, neither one
of the quarterbacks would have been psyced out.

How about that 23 year old 2nd year man getting a super bowl win, now he'll
go about winning four more.

ive lived in las vegas for so time, my circle of friends and i have done our fare
share of betting on sports. we all handicapped the superbowl and felt seattle had the edge. but my friend in sports book told us something was not right.the first seed seahawks with best record and stats was being bet 18% more than the sixth
seed steelers and yet the points are given to seahawks. no book in the world would do this unless they know there is no way the seattle team can win.you see
for those of you that dont understand booking the object is to get the same amount of money on both teams so you dont care who wins because you get the juice.that is the fee you charge the loosing wager. 10% of the bet. in las vegas alone the sports book made 94.5 million proffit by seattle not making the spread.
and you wonder why the officials made ?????? calls. thanks to inside info my friends took the team that should have lost and laughed all the way to the bank.

The worse part of this blatant fixed game was, you strip the "hope" of a team that earned the right to be there, that were number 1 seed, that way outplayed the Pittdburg Steelers in every stat, simply because they were a team that was so callled from "South Alaska" and were not respected in the league. I think of the young children who look up to these players and who watched the game. We raise our children to be honest, and to not cheat, and now they have learned that not only can you fix an election, but you can now also fix the biggest sporting event of the year. Am I a Seahawk fan, darn right I am, have had season tickets for 30 years, so this was a blowing crush to me and many others who saw our team "win" in everyway, but simply not be given the right to bring home the trophy. Am I whining... call it what you want, seems to me the only people who believe it was called fairly are Pitt fans with blinders on. So be it, the whole country saw what happened, and seems Steelers come by thier name honestly.

Stevens was bad; but did catch two critical balls, one for a touchdown, and one that more than likely would have set up another; at least a field goal to put the Hawks within 1.
HOLDING? Even Madden, and any other analyst (besides Rod Woodson) commented on the ticky tackiness of that call; many pointing out the offsides Steeler on the same play.
The Phantom Touchdown; Ben says he wasn't in.
Offensive Pass Interference? I think a Steeler defender was being rather touchy feely with Jackson, and a tap does not give momentum, just separates the hands of the cornerback from your elbows when they are not supposed to be there; and I remember Marvin Harrison in the Indy game, in the fourth quarter, being raped by a Steeler corner, not playing the ball, stopping a touchdown to put Indy up when he clearly did not play the ball, which is blatant interference; the excuse; LET THEM PLAY IN THE BIG GAMES.
Illegal chop "BLOCK" on a QB tackling someone who picked him off; how do you block when tackling; was it an illegal chop block on Carson Palmer? This was a total back breaking call, which to any logical person, looks as if it could have been intentionally called to kill any hopes of victory for a team it seemed no one, not even Broncos and Indy fans, wanted to win.
And by the way, for you Steelers fans who say Stevens did fumble; he didn't; 2 feet weren't down; and Hasselbeck was falling when he was touched. Nice try.
Steelers fans, be happy you have the title.  Seahawks fans be p***ed as hell you had it kept from you like a game of keep away by the officials.  Seattle did not overcome like CHAMPIONS should; but Pittsburg didn't win like CHAMPIONS should either.

Anonymous said...

To those Steeler fans talking about whining, and it's over, get over it! You have to realize that many of the comments you have read are not only from Seahawk fans, they're from football fans from all over the league. If you don't recall, you all were in the whiners seat during the playoffs, so why make it look like you wouldn't be pissed off if the bad calls had went the other way? Fact remains that even with Stevens' dropped passes, the Seahawks played a better game, but somehow came away on the short end. First time in history that a team who led in yardage, time of possession, first downs and takeaways didn't win the Superbowl. If you don't think there was some crooked s*** going on, you're badly mistaken. If we football fans don't complain, the same crap will continue to happen, and it might be against you if you make it to the Superbowl against a team that is highly favored to win it all. Too much money would have been lost, and the crooked people in this world weren't about to let that happen. Don't be surprised if something comes out of this Slapshot gambling thing, Gretzsky's wife had $75,000 on Pittsburgh to win. Imagine how many other big names had big money on the game, most likely because they knew something we all believe happens in all sports. FIX!!!

Agree thoroughly with Original Entry. I'm a Steelers fan who is saddened and disappointed that they did not win the game fair and square and emerged with a tarnished trophy.  Lotsa blame to go around, including the Seahawks utter failure to mount a 2-minute offense.  While I only saw the fourth quarter, I believe the heavily partisan Steeler crowd roaring - and the Steelers players bitchin' and screamin' to officials about offenses real  and imagined - plus the sheer importance of The Game - helped sway the officials' actions and interpretaions.  At best, a hollow victory for one team and seetrhing resentment for the other.

It's time for the retirement home maybe Bob Levy? hmmm Let's see. A low BLOCK flag on a TACKLE. So many holds. You know what they do to people who do bad in their jobs. They are fired. Simply said and Im in High School.

Before this superbowl, the worst one was the ravens giants game. but i dont know, this one might rank up there. by  a  hair. So anyways, I spent like my hold Sunday watching the worst sung National Anthem, officiated game, half time show, and officiated game.
Do your flippin job right u morons
Ive seen better officiating at my high school bball       games. Stop this piddly crap!

GO VIKINGS!!!

All this complaining about the Steelers victory in so called "Worst Superbowl ever".I just want to set the record straight on one fact.
The Rothlisburger TD as pertains to the rules.
FACt: It was originally called a TD by game official
Fact>It was challenged  and needed irrefutable evidence to the contrary to be overturned
Fact:The replay could not proove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was'nt a TD
Fact:The TD  call stood
Fact: It looked like it broke the plane originally by a few inches but Big Ben was pushed back then extended the ball with his arm making it look possibly suspicious...But you always look at the initial forward progress
Fact:I would almost bet the house that 'The Bus would have bulled into the endzone on next play
Fact: Some of the other disputed plays were close such as the pass interference etc & due to lack of conclusive evidence the original call according to the rules had to be upheld
Fact: So much crying and sourgrapes over this game .Has there ever been a team with such a bunch of crybaby losers as the Seattle Seahawks who can't admit they got beat by a better team???

I think the pro-Steelers/Seahawk whining posts are laughable. I guarantee that 98% of them are Steelers fans, not objective, impartial football fans. Of the posts that are upset about one sided football and poor officiating, and the fact that Seattle had this game kept out of reach by very bad calls, I'd say that at least half are not even Seattle fans. Flip it the other way.....STEELERS FANS WOULD BE CRYING, WHINING, WHIMPERING, WAILING, AND POINTING FINGERS at least as much as any Seahawk fan! I'm a Cowboys fan, and I'd be upset if this happened to Dallas. No one can rightfully tell Pittsburg they don't deserve the title, because they do. However, if you can't logically see why people, not just Seattle fans, are upset about some calls that TOTALLY changed the face of the game, than you need to quit lying to yourself and admit that Seattle has something to be upset about. Also, quit saying that the Steelers were the better team.....they got beat on the ground, in the air, defensively, and in the turn-over battle. They won on the scoreboard, which is the most important....but I don't care who you are, you can see that they had SEVERAL calls help them get there...Don't care about the Ben TD; don't care about the Jackson PI TD called back..while bad calls, I believe the crap was a PHANTOM HOLD  that wasn't there, negating a huge gain and momentum swing, followed by a ridiculous chop block call that would make anyone question the refs intentions! So back of Seattle for being a little ticked; They lost a game where they were the better team. In the end the score is what counts and it is time to move on....but Seattle was better; quit saying they weren't.

I'm not saying that the seahawks should have won but the steelers being the team that the media hyped them up to be should have done a better job. When everybody knew that the steelers would face the seahawks in the super bowl thier was little doubt in most peoples minds that the steelers would win no mtter that the seahawks were just as good. This game was close to being a setup game just so the steelers could win a super bowl and a new dynasty can begin.

What I find amazing is that I could careless which team won, but both sides of the arguement can remember four or five penalties going against the Seahawks, if you look at the box score you will see that the Seahawks had only 7 penalties called against them the entire game.  HMMMMM, can any of you remember that many penalties in an other super bowl ????

For the Seattle crybabies and other excuse makers...print this out and give it to them, no need to say anything.

1. The Refs didn't give up the longest run in SB history...Seattle's defense did.
2. The Refs didn't bite on a 43 yd trick play, Randle to Ward for a TD...Seattle's defense did.
3. The Refs didn't allow Ben to scramble around on a 3rd and 28 and complete a long pass to the 2 yd. line...Seattle's defense did.
4. The Refs didn't miss two field goals, that was Seattle.
5. The Refs didn't fail to step out of bounds late in the 1st half to stop the clock in Pitt territory in a crunch time situation...Seattle's offense did.
6. The Refs didn't let the 1st half clock tick down from 48 seconds all the way down to 13 seconds before finally running their next play at Pitt's 36 yd line...Seattle's offense did.
7. And on this play, 3rd down, 53 yds away from a FG, it wasn't the Refs who tried and failed to go deep for a TD rather than a safer 5-7 yd play and timeout setting up a much easier FG attempt....that, again, would be Seattle's offense.
8. The Refs didn't get confused by Pitt's zone defense and throw an INT...that would be Seattle's QB.
9. The Refs didn't let a little physical contact intimidate them from catching 4 very catchable passes...that would be the Seattle TE Jeremy Stevens.
10. With approx. 20 seconds left in the game, knowing they need a TD and FG, in no particular order, and in easy FG range on 4th down, it wasn't the Refs who ignored the FG and elected to throw up a prayer trying for a TD...that AGAIN would be Seattle.

And Seattle if you're Steel salty and steel reaching for excuses...

1. The Refs didn't constantly punt deep into the end zone, repeatedly giving Pitt the ball at the 20 yd line...that of course was Seattle.
2. It wasn't the Refs who received a Christmas gift wrapped easy INT lobbed in perfect position to return deep into Pitt territory...the lucky beneficiary of that break would be Seattle.
3. It wasn't the Refs who got a break when a Steeler DB dropped an easy int early in the game...that too would be a break for Seattle.
4. It wasn't the Refs who caught a break when a Steeler WR dropped a very catchable TD pass...that break again would go to Seattle.
5. It wasn't the scapegoat Refs that received a break when a WR caught the ball, turned, stepped, was hit hard enough to cause a fumble, and then ruled INCOMPLETE...that would be of course, another chance for Seattle.
(this was an interesting call considering that after Troy's famous overruled Int, the NFL stated that it WAS a catch. If so, than this definitely WAS a catch)
6. The Refs werent the ones who caught a break when at the conclusion of a 2nd qtr play, as a Pitt DE was walking away, the Seattle Center blindsided the defenseless player, leveling him to the ground. This mysteriously unseen crime was again another break for Seattle.
7. It wasn't the Refs who got a break when Pitt QB Big Ben was blocked in the back as he pursued the DB who he'd tossed an int to...that again would go to Seattle.
8. It wasn't the Refs who stopped Seattle RB Alexander in a few key situations. That would be the Pittsburgh Steelers.
9. It wasn't the Refs who converted many of their 3rd downs yet stopped their opponent on 3rd down often...that would be the Pittsburgh Steelers.
10. And the very bottom line is this...On plays when there weren't any penalties...One team made plays and one team didn't. The end result was the final score, 21-10.

Get over it Seattle, lose with a little dignity.

Congratulations to the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

What does it really matter if the Steelers weren't playing up to par, they still won the damn game. I could see if the Seahawks lost by one point but it was 11. To bad the Seahawk fans don't stand behind their players like Pittsburgh does. We've gone to other Super Bowls and lost, so what.. there's always next year or as you know 26 years down the road. The Seahawks and their cry baby fans can't accept the fact they finally got to the Super Bowl and screwed up. With the comments the Seahawk coach is making I can understand why the team lost without pride. Tuck your tails, wipe your nose and eyes, take your ball and go home. Tell yourself it was the refs fault, the players getting hurt, Pittsburgh cheated, ya had to itch your balls, got gas at the wrong moment, sneezed, or shit yourself, YOU STILL LOST for pete sake get over it. Sissys!!!

I Have been a Steelers fan since I knew what afootball was. Not only am I proud of the players and coaching staff for doing what no football team in Nfl have done, I cant say enough about the Roney family . They get up every day put their pants on , like they say just like all of us. This victory just goes to show what you can accomplish if all becomes one, and you work to achieve one goal.

With that said its just a" football game" Their is a lot of very challenging events taking place day in and out with larger consequences such as life and death .
Eating at us all why cant we take some of this wasted energy and apply it to helping people not putting them down. We want to go fight others battles for them while we just let this Great U S A go down the tubes.

Key plays ladies and gents, key plays. Seattle blew several. Pitt blew more. Seattle outplayed them everywhere. 3 big plays, that's it. Enought to win, yes. Do they deserve it; yes. But lay off the Seattle fans with an obvious gripe. Whether it was one bad call or 10, the holding call which everyone knows was NOT THERE, would have put Seattle up, or at least within one, and not set up the trick play, which no one is taking away from Pitt, but it shouldn't have been there. I see these lists and.....Pittsburg didn't stop Seattle consistantly like Seattle stopped them...Pitt just busted a few big plays. Here's one for your list......SEATTLE DROVE ON THAT POSSESION FROM THERE OWN 2..........IT WASN'T PITTSBURG WHO STOPPED THE 97 YARD DRIVE...IT WAS THE GUYS IN STRIPES. Then they called a BS foul on Hasselbeck, which I believe is what was the icing on the cake starting the controversy. Like I said before....everyone of you telling the Seattle fans to get over it would be doing the EXACT SAME THING if the tables were turned exactly the other way. It's not what was called, it's the timing of the calls; a few of which were obviously BS. And by the way, to the one who wrote the list including the BREAKS and the INT of Big Ben....you make no sense. How can you rip seattle for making a play...and not blast Ben for blowing it? Congrats Pittsburg on the win; I will not take that from them. But just on that ONE call, the face of the game is totally changed.
