Once again....Monk doesn't get into the Hall.
The men who did are deserving [though I didn't think Harry Carson would make it]. Troy Aikman, Reggie White, Warren Moon, Carson, Rayfield Wright and John Madden are all Hall worthy. That does take some of the sting out of the non-Monk vote.
But why isn't he there? Of the receivers in his era that made it....
Charlie Joiner....750 catches, 12,146 yards, 65 TD
Steve Largent....819 catches, 13,089 yards, 100 TD
James Lofton.....764 catches, 14,004 yards, 75 TD
John Stallworth....537 catches, 8723 yards, 63 TD
Lynn Swann....336 catches, 5462 yards, 51 TD
Art Monk....940 catches, 12,721 yards, 68 TD
Michael Irvin.....750 catches, 11,904 yards, 65 TD
Monk easily has more receptions than anyone on this list [or anyone in the Hall]. Only Lofton and Largent have more yards than Monk......and only Lofton and Largent have more TD grabs than Monk. So why isn't he in the Hall???
Why is Swann and Stallworth there??? Oh, cuz they won 4 Super Bowls? Well, Monk has won THREE. So why isn't he in the Hall???
I've heard people whining that Irvin didn't get there this year.....that maybe his checkered past has hurt him with the voters. Um, but why isn't Monk in there with him??? Why is it just a crime that Irvin isn't there??
IT IS A FREAKING CRIME!!
I truly believe that 2007 may be the year, however. Next year....Bruce Matthews is the only real strong newcomer on the Hall of Fame scene [and he should get in]. Monk, Irvin and Thurman Thomas should get their calls then.
I won't hold my breath.

I don't think Irvin's less than stellar past is what kept him out. These are the voters that let Lawrence Taylor in.

Yeah, but when LT went in....he was already on track getting his life together. Irvin just had that crack pipe charge against him a few months ago. I think it turned off some voters. If that incident didn't happen...I think he'd had a better shot.

Not really, he was arrested on drug charges twice in the fall of 1998, and was elected in 1999. I don't know, maybe the drugs did have something to do with Irvin's failure this year, but that doesn't explain why he was even a finalist or why he didn't get in last year. Seems to me that this was a case where there were more deserving candidates than spots to be filled, coupled with the just bizarre tendencies of the voters (such as not letting Monk in as stated in this excellent piece). Next year's vote will be kind of telling. If he doesn't get in then, maybe the drugs are playing a bigger role than I think.

Its Journalists that do the voting... And the journalists have had a long running feud with Dan Snyder going back to the mid 90's (check the record(s) ). Most recently the journalists have to pay now to attend Redskins home games.
Journalists are a tight group.. They are not voting against Art Monk, one of the classiest and most talented player to ever play that position.. They are voting AGAINST Dan Snyder. Basically the HOF voting system is not fair. Those who never played the game and write personal opinions biased or otherwise.. should not be voting on any league's Hall Of Fame. It makes as much sense those of us in this BLOG, making the decision. The system needs to be changed. Put ALL the voting in the hands of the players and/or NFLPA. The Art Monk example should be held up as a catalyst towards this change.
