Rest In Peace, Kirby Puckett

REST IN PEACE, KIRBY:  I will always remember Puckett's Game 6 heroics [even though I found out about it the next morning before heading off to school].  I was a Braves Hater back in those days and what Puckett did in that game turns stars into legends.  He's the 2nd youngest player of the Hall of Fame to die as a current member of the Hall.  He really was a fan's player....meaning he had the love and passion and overall exuberance for the game that most fans love to see.  If Barry Bonds had 10% of Puckett's personality....most people would dub him the Greatest of All Time.  Goodbye, Kirby.  We will miss you.

VOTE FOR YOUR HATE:  Please, click this link [http://webcenter.polls.aol.com/modular.jsp?template=458&view=74430&pollId=74494&channel=aol_us_sportsbasketball] to vote for the NCAA hoops person you hate the most.

THE WHITE BOY IS BACK:  Someone on my blog entry about the hated athlete correctly saw that there was only one person on the list that wasn't whte.   Aside from smacking on Sheldon Williams' mug [which looks like Ken Griffey's face in that Simpsons episode]...there really aren't any Black players that gets ripped on that bad.  Well, check out ESPN.com - COLUMNIST/FORDE - Forde: The reemergence of the white player to read about the fact that white guys are back in style on the hoops court...and not just the Aussies or Euros.

I'M YOUR PUSHER-MAN:  With all these "false" positive drug tests apparantly going on out there....MLB is deciding to sell legal supplements to their players.  The problem is that many players are getting their supplements from overseas....and lord knows what is really in them.  Some players who have tested positive have done so for things they didn't know were in their pills.  So the MLB is trying to help out, I guess, by slinging them themselves.  This is kinda touchy.  What it looks like is the MLB trying to cash in by being a street pharmacist to these guys.  On the other hand, if it helps with these players putting USDA regulated supplements into their bodies instead of these rogue products....it has to be a good thing.  Of course, that's only to the people that will buy them.  And there's the other factor.  If baseball is selling this stuff yet certain players are still buying it elsewhere....will baseball earmark those players and their testing results???  We'll see.

ALL ACC TEAM:  JJ Redick [Duke], Sheldon Williams [Duke], Tyler Hansbrough [UNC], Craig Smith [Boston College] and Sean Singletary [Virginia].   I have absolutely no disagreements here.  These have been the five best players in the conference all season long.  Redick, Williams and Hansbrough were unanimous selections.  Tar Heels David Noel [2nd team] and Reyshawn Terry [3rd team] also received votes.

ACC ALL-FRESHMEN TEAM:  Tyler Hansbrough [UNC], Greg Paulus [Duke], Bobby Frasor [UNC], Josh McRoberts [Duke] and Tyrese Rice [Boston College].  Hansbrough will be the ACC freshmen of the year [as will the national one].  Paulus led the ACC in assists....with Frasor finishing right behind him.

ACC ALL DEFENSIVE TEAM:  Sheldon Williams [Duke], Vernon Hamilton [Clemson], Jamo Gordon [VTech], Cedric Simmons [NC State] and Zabian Dowdell [VTech].   The Hokies were one of the best defensive teams in the league this year...and are represented with two guys on the defensive team.  Sheldon Williams will easily walk away with the Defensive MVP honors.

THE REALLY BIG EAST:  The Big East expanded to 16 teams this year....and extended their All-Big East teams to ELEVEN FREAKIN' PLAYERS!!  What is that??  I guess they really meant "team"....like with reserves and all that.  So, here are the Big East 1st teamers.....Eric Hicks [Cincinnati], Rudy Gay [UConn], Steve Novak [Marquette], Chris Quinn [Notre Dame], Aaron Gray [Pitt], Quincy Douby [Rutgers], Gerry McNamara [Syracuse], Randy Foye [Villanova], Allan Ray[Villanova], Mike Gansey [West Virginia] and Kevin Pittsnogle [West Virginia]

CHARLOTTE GETSNASCAR HALL OF FAME:  As if this wasn't a given.  Why'd they even have this drawn out competition??  And this is no offense to the cities that were vying for this but Charlotte had a ton going for it.  It is the hub of NASCAR.  Most teams and drivers have their headquarters there....work out of there and usually is the place to go for Gear Heads anyways.  Adding the Hall there would just add to the experience.  NASCAR fans can come to Charlotte, tour Lowe's Motor Speedway, go on the tours of the various garages and other places set up in the area, and hit the Hall of Fame.  Congrats Charlotte.

NOTE TO MR SNYDER:  Please break up your little group [with Jerry Jones of all people] that may block the vote to get this current proposal into a deal.  I understand that the Skins are worth more than anyone else and that if things fall apart, your....and my....Redskins would benefit with no cap and a heap of money.  But I love the NFL too....and I want the thing to stay alive.  So please think not only about me....but about those fans in Jacksonville, Charlotte, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Green Bay and Arizona when making your arguements.

The funny part of the return Of Mr. White is that it happened at a rare point of history. For the past decade, kids were allowed to jump from high school to the pros without having their game squashed by the oppressive college system. This treend began in earnest with Garnett, and only gained steam in recent years.

We are now at a point where cololege ball has had the best eligible players excluded from them. Morrison and Reddick have some talent, but would we even know who they were if

- Lebron was playing for Duke

- Carmello was a senior at Syracuse

- Dwight Howard was killing people for some southern school

- etc...

For the last 4 years, the true talent skipped right by college ball. What was left is a B List of talent that nobody paying any real money wanted 2 or 3 years ago. Those B players are at their peak now, and things should settle back to normalcy once that Oden kid starts playing.

You know what makes absolutely no sense about your take!

How do you explain the surge of white ball players in the NBA then????

Recruits are now (finally!) looking past the all the kids that can jump out of the GYM, but could not hit a mid range jumper to save their lives!, and also looking for some type of respectable character.

The dunk fest is coming to an end.

The situation you are talking about with all the [A] list players (from your opinion) jumping directly into the NBA and skipping College is what has caused so many of the problems in the NBA.
Street thugs and convicted felons don't by tickets, soda's, or merchandise, the middle working class family does, and the middle working class family is not taking their 5-13 year old kids to see NBA players throw blows, use bad words and phrases, not stand up for the national anthem, have their pants down around their ankles, and jump into the stands and punch people.....

I don't consider this having anything to do with a racial issue, and having more to do with the return of the pure shooter.

Because I think we all like to see a nasty dunk every now and again.
