Hey, remember when 6:00 rolled around and the NFL had a nice tribute to all of the Super Bowl MVPs??
Remember the big ovation that Lynn Swann and Franco Harris got?
Right about then I thought....where was Terry Bradshaw? And then I thought, I don't remember seeing Joe Montana either.
They skipped the event in apparant disputes over money. The NFL was giving each MVP $1,000 for incidental expenses, two plane tickets, hotel, a Cadillac to roll around in for the weekend, two tickets to the game and other events over the week.
ESPN.com is reporting that Montana wanted $100,000 for an appearance fee....which the NFL said no. Montana is the only three-time Super Bowl MVP.
The article states that Bradshaw also had issue with the small money figure...but has said he wanted to spend time with his family. On a personal note, I saw him on NFL Network's "Total Access" show in Detroit earlier in the week.
The only other living MVP that wasn't there was Jake Scott....who was in Austrailia at the time.
I thought this was a great tribute to the Super Bowl....and a very telling one. Sure, there were some of the biggest names in NFL history strolling from behind that huge curtain. Guys like Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Harris, Marcus Allen, Riggo, Jerry Rice, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Tom Brady. But behind the same curtain, guys like Desmond Howard, Mark Rypien, Richard Dent, Doug Williams, Larry Brown, Dexter Jackson and Deion Branch who won't be in that Hall of Fame class....but will always be remembered for being the best player in the biggest games of their lives.
It was just a shame that Montana and Bradshaw with 5 Super Bowl MVPs between them didn't bother to show up.

The talk about Joe Montana wanting more money is totally untrue. That report is from a San Francisco reporter who very seldom gets it right. Montana had promised his boys, he would be at their games over the weekend. A good family man. Like Joe says, there is life after football.
