Reveling In Others' [read: Duke, Cowboys] Misfortunes

Today was a great sports day for me....considering that NONE of my favorite teams actually played today.

It started off grand as I watched Duke lose, at home, to Virginia Tech.  Now, V-Tech is a veteran squad....especially by current ACC standards....but they aren't in the top half in the conference this year.  Still, it was nice to see that the Hokies "out-Duke'd" the Blue Devils.  Tech outhustled Duke; Tech outplayed Duke; Tech was more poised than Duke.  And all those lucky little moments that the Devils have grown to be accustomed to in that big cigar box known as Cameron Indoor Stadium.....the Hokies got.  A jump shot from the seat of the pants and a layup that left a little bit of junk-sweat on Greg Paulus' head were crack to a Carolina fan.  And, sorry Dook, but no half court shot to bail you out of this one.

Later in the afternoon....word gets to me that UCLA got popped.  Good.  I have nothing against UCLA, but it at least shuts up those honks who were already chatting about the Bruins going undefeated this year.  Sit down, they are a great team but are in the same class as the rest of the top dawgs.

Oh, but if UCLA lost, then the #2 team should acsend to the top spot.  Who's that team??  My North Carolina Tar Heels.  So don't screw it up and lose to Florida State tomorrow night!!!!

And the capper.  The cream.  The beauty.  The Dallas Cowboys killed themselves and their 2006 season.  If there was any team that was as over-blown as this team....let them stand up.  No one?  Correct.

From the Tuna's kissing and whining....to the bi-weeky Terrell Owens mess....to placing Tony Romo among the greatest things since sliced bread....to their kicking change....to the fact that they were on national TV, seemingly, more than any other franchise this year despite not doing anything.....this team was covered waaaaay too much [and will be for the next few months].

So, the end was great.  A sure-thing field goal to give the 'Boys the lead late in their NFC Wildcard game with the Seattle Seahawks.  Sure fire until Tony Romo fumbled the hold and Dallas choked away a victory.  But, six weeks ago, Romo could do no wrong.  He was the next great thing.  Forget Roger Staubachor Troy Aikman....Romo was going to lap them all!!

The Redskins fan in me smiled.  And, yeah, go ahead with the "where did your team end up" blasts.  Yeah, my team tanked and stunk up the joint, too....but we weren't the so-called favorites to win the NFC around Thanksgiving.  And, who cares right now: I've known our season has been over for 2 months now.  You just found out yours was, and that your high hopes were trashed on a muffed hold on a 20-yd field goal attempt.  At least we weren't thaaaaaaaaaaat close.

Ah.  It just makes it worthwhile, sometimes!

That's sort of a B- version of how I act when the Yankees lose.
