2007 Was The Worst Sports Year EVER!!!!

It is fitting that the end of 2007 saw the Mitchell Report bring on a firestorm of roided up players.  This has been a really bad sports year all the way around ... and may be known as the Year Or The Roid.  Look at the bad crap that happened this year:

*Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's record and everyone felt dirty by it.

*Barry Bonds gets indicted by the Feds for lying to 'em.

*Super Bowl XLI was played in a soggy Dolphins Stadium ... most likely the worst conditions ever in a Super Bowl.

*The NBA Finals?  A 4-game sweep.

*The World Series?  A 4-game sweep.

*The BCS Championship game?  Florida blew out Ohio State

*The Final Four?  Florida soundly beat Ohio State.

*With all the doping in the Tour de France, did anyone actually finish the race?

*Sean Taylor was murdered.

*The only big NFL story (that could be considered good) is the New England Patriots quest for perfection.  Yet, they are stained by SpyGate, fair or not.

*Michael Vick's life explodes when he pleads guilty to dog fighting.  Not only did it ruing the career of one of the NFL's most marketable stars, the details of the case were troubling and gruesome ... and opened up a can or worms for this underground culture that involves athletes.

*The New York Knicks suck on the court ... and in the court.

*NBA official Tim Donaghy is charged with betting on ... and possibly fixing ... NBA games.

*Wrestler Chris Benoit kills his family ... then himself.

*NCAA Football has about 8 teams that may deserve a shot at a national championship ... but only two will get a chance to prove it.  And one isn't the only undefeated team out there (Hawaii)

*Marion Jones must give back medals after her doping surfaced.

*The NFL's much hyped trip to London was a dud.

*The Don Imus v Rutgers women's hoops team deal.

A few more:

Just in time before end of the year: NHL's Chris Simon suspended 30 games for stomping on another player, breaking his own record of 25 games for assaulting another player. Both suspensions in one calendar year!

#1 overall NBA draft pick Greg Oden picked to a small market team... and out for the year with an injury.

continued fromm previous post:

*NCAA is a crooked organization that sanctions academic fraud.  Is it surprising that they can't pick a champion fairly?

*The Imus story isn't a sports story.

*Tim Donaghy worked for a league that is premised on bending rules, therefore it is not surprising that one of its officials would see fit to play fast and loose with the rules himself.  At least the NBA is shown for the farce it is and people can stop treating David Stern as if he knows anything about sports.

*I'm wasn't a Sean Taylor fan, but his death was sad event.

Yes, my friend, there were a lot of negatives to point to in 2007, but in some cases there are silver linings and in others we can only hope that events represent a hitting of bottom so that there is nowhere to go but up.

Merry Christmas.

You forgot about Todd Collins' deal with the devil.

It could have been worse.  We could live in a time when all these dirty little details were swept under the rug.

*Bonds' steroid use is a lingering story.  His beating Aaron became a non-story int eh realization that Aaron is still the true home run king and that nobody stayed up to watch Bonds break the record.

*The Super Bowl was at least a relatively close game that started with the game's best return man doinghis thing and the league's best QB taking on the league's best defense.

*The NBA finals featured a sweep by a superior team led by a quiet superstar over a team led by the NBA's poster boy for overmarketing.

*In the World Series, a legitimate Division Winner swept a wild card team that played mediocre baseball for most of the season.  Hopefully a sign that the wild card gimmick will soon lose its luster.

*While detractors may be able to claim that the spying tarnishes New England's first three Super Bowl seasons, you'd be hard pressed to claim they're still doing it.  This team is undefeated and it's valid.

*Vick's story is about a guilty man getting punished for what he did.  How many times have big name athletes gotten lighter sentence's than you or I would have received?  Vick's removal from the league is an act of cleansing.

*Marion Jones' story is a lingering one as well as Bonds.  It culminated this year, but justice was served.
