I used to make a post every year since Super Bowl XL that had little facts about the Super Bowl. I would even have the same amount of facts as the number of the Super Bowl ... so the first one I did had 40 of them. Life comes at you and I lacked the time to dedicate to the posts every season that I stopped a couple of years ago.
While I am not doing the same thing, I will put up some of my facts heading into Super Bowl LX. The Roman Numerals switched, so I'm going nostalgic.
WE MEET ONCE AGAIN
Super Bowl LX becomes the 10th repeat matchup in Super Bowl history. The Patriots and Seahawks met in Super Bowl XLIX when New England won the game, 28-24. The other nine multiple matchups:
Steelers-Cowboys (they have actually met three times), Dolphins-Redskins, 49ers-Bengals, Cowboys-Bills, Giants-Patriots, Patriots-Eagles, Patriots-Rams, Chiefs-49ers, Chiefs-Eagles.
Of those repeat matchups, the team that won the first meeting is 6-3 in the second meeting. The Patriots beat the Rams twice, lost to the Giants twice, and split with the Eagles.
WHO HAS WON THE MOST TITLES
1. Green Bay Packers (13)
2. Chicago Bears (9)
3. New York Giants (8)
4. New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers (6)
6. Washington Redskins/Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys (5)
Who has the most NFL title game appearances?
1. New York Giants (22)
2. Chicago Bears (19)
3. Green Bay Packers (18)
4. New England Patriots, Washington Redskins/Commanders (11)
6. Los Angeles/St Louis/Cleveland Rams (10)
BACK TO THE GAME
This is the Patriots' 12th Super Bowl appearance, extending their record. They are 6-5 in those games. The Seahawks are making their 3rd Super Bowl appearance.
BAD TO GOOD
This is the sixth Super Bowl ... and the first since 2003 ... to feature two teams who missed the playoffs the previous season.
Super Bowl III: Jets vs Colts
Super Bowl XVI: 49ers vs Bengals
Super Bowl XXIV: Rams vs Titans
Super Bowl XXV: Ravens vs Giants
Super Bowl XXXVIII: Patriots vs Panthers
Super Bowl LX: Seahawks vs Patriots
COMMON OPPONENTS
The Seahawks and Patriots faced seven common opponents. Both teams were 6-1 in those games, with the only difference being New England losing to the Steelers and Seattle losing to the Buccaneers.
Steelers: Seahawks (W), Patriots (L)
Saints: Seahawks (W), Patriots (W)
Buccaneers: Seahawks (L), Patriots (W)
Texans: Seahawks (W), Patriots (W)
Titans: Seahawks (W), Patriots (W)
Falcons: Seahawks (W), Patriots (W)
Panthers: Seahawks (W), Patriots (W)
MOST POPULAR SUPER BOWL SQUARE NUMBERS
There have been 59 Super Bowls and 236 quarters played (the two overtime games count as final score squares). Here are the most popular numbers for your Super Bowl squares:
22 - 3, 0
21 - 7. 0
20 - 0, 0
18 - 7, 3
13 - 4, 0
11 - 7, 4
Here are the numbers that have never come up in a Super Bowl quarter: (1, 1), (2, 1), (3, 2), (5, 3), (5, 4), (5, 5), (6, 2), (6, 5), (8, 7), (8, 8), (9, 9). If you draw one of those 11 combinations, you may as well not bother to care about your sheet.
FEBRUARY BOWLING
AFC is 13-9 in Super Bowls played in February
SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN
*The team who scores first is 40-19 in Super Bowls.
*Teams who score at least 30 points are 30-4. The only losses were by Cowboys (SB XIII), 49ers (XLVII), Patriots (LII), and Eagles (LVII)
*Teams leading at halftime are 42-13 (there have been three ties at half)
AFC DOMINATED BY TRIO
The AFC champion in the Super Bowl has been represented by the Chiefs, Patriots or Peyton Manning in 12 of the last 14 Super Bowls. Only the Ravens (XLVII) and Bengals (LVI) bucked that trend. That streak goes back to 19 of the last 25 Super Bowls.
If you include the Steelers to that mix, those four would be in 22 of the last 25 Super Bowls.
NBC BROADCASTS THE SUPER BOWL AGAIN
This is the 21st time that NBC will broadcast the Super Bowl ... trailing only CBS. This will be the first Super Bowl broadcast by NBC since Super Bowl LVI between the Rams and Bengals.
This will be Mike Tirico's first Super Bowl as an announcer. Joining him is Cris Collinsworth for his 6th Super Bowl as color analyst. Collinsworth also played in two Super Bowls as a wide receiver for the Bengals. Of the six Super Bowls he will have called, five involved the Patriots.
NEXT GREAT MOMENT
Every Super Bowl has their moment. Something you remember it for. Like the previous Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl, it is remembered as the one where they didn't give Marshawn Lynch the ball and Russell Wilson threw a pick. Lets' look at this Friends style compilation of every Super Bowl's moment.
NFC WEST IS GETTING DOMINANT
The NFC West is having a moment. An NFC West team has reached the Super Bowl in five of the last eight years. The division has also reached the Super Bowl in 8 of the last 14 years. That includes the Seahawks three times, 49ers three times, and Rams twice. The NFC West is just 2-6 in those Super Bowls.
In that time frame, the NFC East has been there three times (all Eagles) and the NFC South has been three times (Falcons, Panthers and Buccaneers). The NFC North hasn't had a team reach the Super Bowl since the Packers did in Super Bowl XLV.
DIVISION IS ALL IN
The only divisions who haven't had each of their teams reach the Super Bowl is the AFC South (Texans, Jaguars), AFC North (Browns) and NFC North (Lions).
The NFC East is not only the only division where all its members won a Super Bowl ... but each of them have won at least two Super Bowls. Cowboys (5), Giants (4), Commanders (3) and Eagles (2). The NFC East also is the only division where each of their teams have been to multiple Super Bowls ... and each of them have to at least five of them.
The NFC West (Cardinals), AFC East (Bills) and AFC West (Chargers) have three of their four teams with a Super Bowl championship.
DIVISIONS WITH MOST SUPER BOWLS
The NFC East leads here again, but both the AFC East and NFC West can move up the list if their respective teams can win Super Bowl LX.
14-NFC EAST (Cowboys-5, Giants-4, Commanders-3, Eagles-2)
10-AFC WEST (Chiefs-4, Broncos-3, Raiders-3)
9-AFC EAST (Patriots-6, Dolphins-2, Jets-1)
8-AFC NORTH (Steelers-6, Ravens-2)
8-NFC WEST (49ers-5, Rams-2, Seahawks-1)
5-NFC NORTH (Packers-4, Bears-1)
3-NFC SOUTH (Buccaneers-2, Saints-1)
2-AFC SOUTH (Colts-2)
Super Bowl appearances (this includes the Patriots-Seahawks). The NFC East leads this as well, but it is a lot closer than you'd think. The AFC East is now just one behind, breaking a tie with the AFC West ... who were feasting on the run of Chiefs Super Bowl appearances.
23-NFC EAST (Cowboys-8, Giants-5, Commanders-5, Eagles-5)
22-AFC EAST (Patriots-12, Dolphins-5, Bills-4, Jets-1)
21-AFC WEST (Broncos-8, Chiefs-7, Raiders-5, Chargers-1)
17-NFC WEST (49ers-8, Rams-5, Seahawks-3, Cardinals-1)
13-AFC NORTH (Steelers-8, Bengals-3, Ravens-2)
11-NFC NORTH (Packers-5, Vikings-4, Bears-2)
7-NFC SOUTH (Buccaneers-2, Falcons-2, Panthers-2, Saints-1)
5-AFC SOUTH (Colts-4, Titans-1)
This goes by the current divisional format. Before the 1970 merger, divisions were vastly different and in 2002 the league went from six to eight divisions. The Colts have reached a Super Bowl as a member of the "NFC" and AFC, for instance. There are also instances like the 1998 Atlanta Falcons reaching the Super Bowl as a member of the NFC West, or the 1999 Titans as a member of the now-defunct AFC Central.
NEWBIE QBS
This is the first time both quarterbacks will be making their first Super Bowl start since Super Bowl LVI when the Rams' Matthew Stafford and the Bengals' Joe Burrow did it. Before that, it was Super Bowl LIV when Patrick Mahomes made his first Super Bowl appearance against Jimmy Garappolo in the first Chiefs-49ers matchup. Before that, you'd have to go back to Joe Flacco vs Colin Kaepernick in Super Bowl XLVII.
Sam Darnold has been to a Super Bowl before as Brock Purdy's backup in Super Bowl LVIII with the 49ers.
CHAMPIONSHIP CITIES
These two cities are a bit on the opposite ends of winning titles.
New England (let's say Boston) has won six Super Bowls since 2001. The Red Sox have won four World Series since 2004, with the last coming in 2018. The Boston Bruins last won a Stanley Cup in 2011 while the Boston Celtics -- who have won more NBA championships than any franchise -- won rings in 2008 and 2024.
As for Seattle ... not so much. The Seahawks won their lone Super Bowl in the 2013 season. The NHL's Kraken have only been around for five season and haven't reached a Stanley Cup Final. The MLB's Mariners have been around 50 years and are the lone franchise to not reach a World Series. The NBA's SuperSonics won a championship in 1979, but lost its franchise to Oklahoma City (who are the defending NBA champs) in 2008.
SAM DARNOLD HAS BEEN AROUND
Sam Darnold has traveled the league in his young career. He was drafted by the Jets, then moved on to the Panthers and 49ers. Last year he led the Vikings to a 14-3 record before getting bounced in the first round. As a free agent he moved to the Seahawks and has his team in the Super Bowl. Darnold becomes just the third quarterback to start a Super Bowl on his 5th (or more) franchise.
Chris Chandler started for the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. He had started games for the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Phoenix Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams and Houston Oilers before reaching that Super Bowl. He would eventually start for the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams before retiring.
Earl Morrall started for the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions and New York Giants before starting Super Bowl III for the Baltimore Colts -- a loss to the New York Jets. He wouldn't start Super Bowl V against the Dallas Cowboys, but came in for an injured Johnny Unitas to lead the Colts to a comeback victory. He would leave for the Miami Dolphins and, as a backup, won Super Bowls VII and VIII.
Both Chandler and Morrall lost the Super Bowls they had started. Darnold hopes to change that streak.
DRAKE MAY HAS NOT BEEN AROUND
Drake Maye will be the second youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl, trailing only Dan Marino in Super Bowl XIX.
SUPER BOWLS IN THE BAY AREA
This will be the second time the Super Bowl will have been played in Santa Clara's Levi Stadium and the third Super Bowl in the Bay Area. Super Bowl 50 ... just ten years ago ... was held in Santa Clara as the Broncos beat the Panthers. Super Bowl XIX was at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, CA where the nearby 49ers toppled the Dolphins.
Note that both previous Super Bowls played in the Bay Area were won by West Coast teams over an East Coast team.
FUTURE SUPER BOWLS
Next year's Super Bowl stays out west as SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA gets Super Bowl LXI. Super Bowl LXII will be held in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. While not official, the thinking is Super Bowl LXIII will go back west to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.
While nothing has been announced, new domed stadiums in Nashville and Washington make those cities strong candidates for future Super Bowls.
SUPER BOWL POST PROGRAMMING
The trend recently is for the network broadcasting the Super Bowl loves breaking in new shows or extended shows following the game. "Undercover Boss" (CBS, 2010), "Extreme" (ABC, 1995), "Homicide" (NBC, 1993), "Davis Rules" (ABC, 1991), "Grand Slam" (CBS, 1990), "The Wonders Years" (ABC, 1988), "Hard Copy" (CBS, 1987), "The Last Precinct" (NBC, 1986), "MacGruder and Loud" (ABC, 1985), "Airwolf" (CBS, 1984), "The A-Team" (NBC, 1983) and "Brothers and Sisters" (NBC, 1979) as shows who debuted after the Super Bowl.
Some other big-time heavyweights have also appeared right after the game. "Lassie," "All in the Family," "60 Minutes," "CHiPs," "Archie Bunker's Place," "Friends," "The X-Files," "The Simpsons," "Survivor," "Grey's Anatomy," "House", "This Is Us" and "The Office" all have been post-Super Bowl shows.
NBC has been doing it differently of late. In 2022, the aired Winter Olympics coverage of the Beijing Games right after Super Bowl LVI. They will do the same this year, airing Olympics coverage on the Milan Games.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT
There have been 25 Super Bowls where one starting QB comes in with Super Bowl experience while the other one doesn't. Does experience matter? Well, the QB with the experience is just 15-10 in those games.
It has been a 50-50 split in the last ten meetings. Nick Foles (new) beat Tom Brady (old), Russell Wilson (new) beat Peyton Manning (old), Aaron Rodgers (new) beat Big Ben (old), Drew Brees (new) beat Peyton Manning (old) and Eli Manning (new) beat Tom Brady (old) in their first Super Bowl matchup.
Five of the last six years the old guys won -- Peyton Manning (old) beat Cam Newton (new), Tom Brady (old) beat Matt Ryan (new), Tom Brady (old) beat Jared Goff (new) and Patrick Mahomes (old) beat both Jalen Hurts (new) and Brock Purdy (new).
Both quarterbacks will be making their first starts in the big game but Seattle's Sam Darnold was Brock Purdy's backup on the 49ers' Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Chiefs.
STICK WITH THE FAVORITES
Seattle enters Super Bowl LIV as the the favorites. The favorite hasn't dominated as much as you'd think. The favorite has won just 14 of the last 25 Super Bowls and has lost 4 of the last 6. The favorite is 36-23 in the Super Bowl, and teams favored by at least seven points are 19-6.
WINNING IN YOUR DIVISION RIVAL'S HOME
The Seahawks will be very familiar with Levi Stadium, home to their NFC West rival 49ers. Does the familiarity matter? Let's look at teams who played a Super Bowl in a division rival's home. Remember that divisions were drastically realigned in 2002.
SB LVIII-Chiefs won in Las Vegas
SB XLIX-Seahawks lost in Arizona
SB XXXVII-Raiders lost in San Diego
SB XXXVI-Rams lost in New Orleans
SB XXXIV-Rams won in Atlanta
SB XXXII-Broncos won in San Diego
SB XXX-Cowboys won in Arizona
SB XXIV-49ers won in New Orleans
SB XXII-Broncos lost in San Diego
SB V-Colts won in Miami
SB III-Jets won in Miami
SB I-Packers won in Los Angeles
So teams are 8-4 in Super Bowls played at the home stadium of a division rival of that season. But that team has also lost 3 of the last 4 times this has happened.
FLIP OF THE COIN
We have a four year streak where the coin alternated from heads to tails. If that trend continues, it should land on heads for Super Bowl LX.
SB 59: Chiefs won the toss, lost the game
SB 58: Chiefs won the toss and the game
SB 57: Chiefs won the toss and the game
SB 56: Bengals won the toss, lost the game
SB 55: Chiefs won the toss, lost the game
SB 54: 49ers won the toss, lost the game
SB 53: Rams won the toss, lost the game
SB 52: Patriots won the toss, lost the game
SB 51: Falcons won the toss, lost the game
SB 50: Panthers won the toss, lost the game
SB 49: Seahawks won the toss, lost the game
SB 48: Seahawks won the toss and the game
SB 47: Ravens won the toss and the game
SB 46: Patriots won the toss, lost the game
SB 45: Packers won the toss and the game
SB 44: Saints won the toss and the game
SB 43: Cardinals won the toss, lost the game
SB 42: Giants won the toss and the game
SB 41: Bears won the toss, lost the game
SB 40: Seahawks won the toss, lost the game
SB 39: Eagles won the toss, lost the game
SB 38: Panthers won the toss, lost the game
SB 37: Buccaneers won the toss and the game
SB 36: Rams won the toss, lost the game
SB 35: Giants won the toss, lost the game
SB 34: Rams won the toss and the game
SB 33: Falcons won the toss, lost the game
SB 32: Packers won the toss, lost the game
SB 31: Patriots won the toss, lost the game
KICKIN' IT UP, PICKIN' IT UP AND MAKING SURE YOU SCORE
Some more little stats for you:
- There has been at least one successful field goal in 57 of 59 Super Bowls.
- Teams that have been shut out for one half (either the first or second) are a combined 1-20. The lone winner was those 1972 Dolphins who went scoreless in the second half of Super Bowl VII.
- Only one Super Bowl featured teams from the same state. Super Bowl XXIX between the Chargers and 49ers. The Giants and Bills both are "New York" teams, but the Giants play their home games in New Jersey.
- Also, teams that intercept a pass for a TD are 13-1 in the Super Bowl. The 2016 Falcons were the first team to have a pick-six and lose a Super Bowl.
NFC WEST VS AFC EAST
This will be the fifth time an AFC East team has played an NFC West team in the Super Bowl. The AFC East is 3-1 in those games, with the Patriots the winner in each one. The lone NFC West win was in Super Bowl XIX when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins. So history favors New England in Super Bowl LX.
SB XIX: 49ers beat Dolphins
SB XXXVI: Patriots beat Rams
SB XLIX: Patriots beat Seahawks
SB LIII: Patriots beat Rams
PASSING FANCY
Of the quarterbacks who threw the most passing attempts in a Super Bowl, 11 of the top 13 performances lost the game. The lone winner is Tom Brady twice -- beating the Seahawks and Falcons in Super Bowls XLIX and LI, respectively.
Of the top 25 most passing attempts, only six won their game.
RUSHING FANCY
Of the running backs with the most rushing attempts in a Super Bowl, 10 of the top 11 performances won the game. The lone loss was Eddie George's 28 rushing attempts (8th all time) in Super Bowl XXXIV.
OF the top 25 most rushing attempts, only six lost their game.
DON'T TRAIL BY DOUBLE DIGITS
Teams that are facing a double-digit deficit are 7-49.
A couple things are interesting about that stat. First, the only teams to come back from a 10-point deficit or more and win are the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII, the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLI, the New England Patriots' magical 25-point comeback in Super Bowl LI, the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowls LIV, LVII and LVIII. All those teams came back from a deficit of exactly 10 points ... except the Patriots comeback.
For the first 43 Super Bowls, only once have we've seen a team make a comeback of 10 or more points to win the game. In the 16 since, we've seen is six times.
Also, it is quite amazing that 53 of 59 Super Bowls have seen one team go up by at least 10 at some point in the game.
WEARING WHITE
The New England Patriots are the designated home team for Super Bowl LX, but they are choosing to wear their road whites in the Super Bowl. This is likely because the Patriots are an NFL-record setting 9-0 on the road this season.
But wearing white has been a Super Bowl blessing. White jerseys are 37-22 all time in the Super Bowl, including going 16-5 in the last 21 games. However, the Chiefs and Eagles won the last two Super Bowls wearing their home color jerseys.
The Patriots have worn red (Super Bowl XX), blue (Super Bowls XXXVI*, XXXVIII*, XLII, XLVI) and white (Super Bowl XXXI, XXXIX*, XLIX*, LI*, LII, LIII*). They are 4-2 while wearing white and 2-3 wearing colored jerseys.
The Seahawks wore white when they won Super Bowl XLVIII, but wore their blues when they lost Super Bowls XL and XLIX. Seahawks are 6-0 this season when wearing their all navy blue uniforms.
SUPER BOWL DATES
Here are just a few dumb notes about Super Bowl dates. Super Bowl XXIX was and will always be the only Super Bowl that was played on the same day (29) as the Roman numeral of the game. January 26th is the most popular date for a Super Bowl as a record four games have been played on that date. And, if you go in order from the earliest date (January 9th) to the latest (February 14th), the only days to not have held the Super Bowl are January 10, 19, and 23 and February 10. This will be the first Super Bowl held on February 8th.
With playoff expansion and longer seasons, the Super Bowl has moved from mid-January to mid-February. With a possible 18th game coming soon, we could see the Super Bowl played in late February. The first 12 Super Bowls were played between January 9-18. The next 25 Super Bowls were played from January 20-31 ... except Super Bowl XXXVI, That game was moved forward a week due to the season pausing after the 9/11 attacks. The next 18 Super Bowls were held between February 1-7. The next 5 (plus next year's game) will be played from February 8-14. No date is set yet for Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta.

STILL HAVEN'T WON ONE
There are now four franchises that have never appeared in a Super Bowl (Lions, Browns, Jaguars and Texans) ... but there are eight others that have never won the Super Bowl in any of their appearances. They are the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons. The Bills and Vikings have lost four games apiece; the Bengals have lost all three; Panthers and Falcons have each lost two. The Chargers, Titans and Cardinals lost on their only trip. And while the Jaguars (1995) and Texans (2002) haven't been to the big game, they don't have quite the drought as some other franchises. The Jets haven't been to the Super Bowl since the 1968 season. It's been a while since the Vikings (1976), Dolphins (1984), Commanders (1991), Bills (1993), Chargers (1994) and Cowboys (1995) have been there as well.
FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT
Green Day will perform pre-game. Charlie Puth will sing the national anthem. Brandi Carlisle will sing "America the Beautiful). Coco Jones will sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing".
Bad Bunny will perform the halftime show.
MIKE VRABEL'S FIRST YEAR
Mike Vrabel becomes the first head coach to get his team to the Super Bowl in his first season since Gary Kubiak and the Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
He joins Don McCafferty (Colts-Super Bowl V), George Seifert (49ers-Super Bowl XXIV), Bill Callahan (Raiders-Super Bowl XXXVII) and John Fox (Panthers-Super Bowl XXXVIII) to take his team to the Super Bowl in his first season. Those coaches were 3-2.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Seahawks lead the all-time series, 11-9. Seattle has won 4 of the last 5 meetings, with the lone loss coming in Super Bowl XLVIII. Seattle has also won 9 of the last 12 meetings, dating back to 1989 when the Seahawks were in the AFC. The last six meetings (and 9 of last 10) have have been decided by 7 points or less.
Their last meeting was on September 15, 2024 when the Seahawks won in New England in overtime, 23-20.
QUARTERBACKS
There have been 22 quarterbacks to start multiple Super Bowls. Of those 22, only Kelly, Tarkenton and Craig Morton never won at least one game. While not a starter in Super Bowl V, Earl Morrall did play most of the game for the Colts after Unitas was knocked out of the game in the 2nd quarter. Morrall started for the Colts in the legendary Super Bowl III loss to the Jets. Steve Young didn't start but threw three passes in Super Bowl XXIV (he started Super Bowl XXIX).
Tom Brady leads the list with an astounding 10 Super Bowl starts. John Elway and Patrick Mahomes have 5 starts each. Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Roger Staubach and Jim Kelly each have 4 starts.
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are the only quarterbacks to start and win two Super Bowls with different teams.
Morton and Kurt Warner are the only other two QBs to start Super Bowls for two different teams.
Of the 22 quarterbacks, only Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, Jim Plunkett, Eli Manning, Len Dawson, Craig Morton and Jalen Hurts did not start in consecutive Super Bowls during their careers.
Of the 22 quarterbacks, only 6 are undefeated in the Super Bowl. That would be Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw (both 4-0), Troy Aikman (3-0), Bart Starr, Jim Plunkett and Eli Manning (2-0).
Jim Kelly has the most Super Bowl losses with 4. Tom Brady, Fran Tarkenton and John Elways each lost 3. John Elway (2-3) and Kurt Warner (1-2) are the only QBs to win a Super Bowl and have a losing record in Super Bowl games.
