SHAUN ALEXANDER IS NFL MVP. No disrespect to Carson Palmer, LT or Steve Smith...but Alexander has really carried the Seahawks to an unprobable 7-2 start. If Seattle was smart, they'd lock him up now!
LOVIE SMITH IS THE COACH OF THE YEAR: There are so many great jobs done around the league, but Smith gets the nod. He has his Chicago Bears at 6-3. They are helmed by a rookie QB, Kyle Orton [who wasn't a stud draft pick, either]. Their defense, to me, has played better than anyone in the NFL.
ANDY REID HAS DONE THE WORST COACHING JOB OF THE YEAR. He let this team implode. Sure, the Terrell Owens Saga isn't totally his fault....but he let it rip his team apart. He mismanaged Donovan McNabb's injury to the point that he won't be around when they really need him. And, the fact that Reid's refusal to run the football has hurt McNabb even more. And his team, which were the overwhelming preseason favorite to be the NFC rep in the Super Bowl....is now 4-5 and may soon be done from the playoffs. He won't lose his job, but his job security isn't as bankable as it once was.
THE "IT REALLY SUCKS TO HAVE TO FIRE YOU" AWARD. This goes to Jim Haslett. No coach has had a job remotely as difficult as Haslett. Hurricane Katrina. Moving the entire team to San Antonio. Home games in New Orleans [preseason], New York, San Antonio or Baton Rouge. Injury to his best player [McAllister]. And the misfortune of playing in the NFC's [maybe the NFL's] best division. He was on thin ice before the season started and the team has lost 7 of 8 after a stunning opening week victory in Charlotte. It is a shame, but he may be canned after the season....although the Saints may actually keep him on since they will be nomadic again next season and Benson may want to hold out on a new coach [and a new coach may want to hold out on the Saints] until the team is officially in Los Angeles.
NEW STEROID POLICY. While it is a marked improvement over the last changes....I still don't like it. I was all for the proposed 2-year banishment for first time users.....and even willing to do just the 1-year proposal made later....or even a 81-game ban. I think that would put the fear of God into players who even think about doing it. Not only the stained career but the fact that you would lose TWO seasons of action would be similar to the NCAA death penalty. However, I understand why the 50-game was made. It was something that MLB could do to save face and the Players Association could live with. It may also suceed in keeping Congress out of baseball affairs, which is in the best interest of both parties.
NO BCS WHINING??? I am one of the most vocal critics of the BCS, but if Texas and USC both win out [and they should] then the BCS actually looks as if it may turn in some really great bowl games. This could be your bowl lineup: ROSE: Texas-UCS. ORANGE: Miami-Penn State. SUGAR: LSU-Virginia Tech. FIESTA: Ohio State-West Virginia.
SPORTZ NFL TOP 10: 1-1-Colts...2-Steelers...3-Panthers...4-Broncos...5-Bengals...6-Giants...7-Cowboys...8-Seahawks...9-Falcons...10-Jaguars
MLB MVP AWARDS. Honestly, I disagree with both of them. But just a tad. I think David Ortiz deserves the award due to his numbers and the timing of those numbers. For a stretch there, he was money. On the other side, I liked Derek Lee's season. He carried the Cubs for the first half of the season....and no one else did anything. Again, nothing against A-Rod or Pujols....they may be the two best players in the league right now. I just think that the other guys were a bit more valuable.
ROBERT TISCH PASSES AWAY. Rest in peace. We lose another NFC East owner [albeit from the same team].
WHERE WILL T.O. END UP NEXT?? My bet is that he goes to Denver. I think he'll be a Bronco next year. He'll get a gun slinging QB [Plummer] who will get him the ball. He'll have an offensive minded coach [Shanahan] who has been known to polish off rough edges. They could use his services. He'll be far away from Philly and wouldn't get near the media scrutiny there as he did on the East coast.
SPEAKING OF THAT, THE EAGLES ARE DONE. There ya go, Lew. Philly is fried. They really needed to beat Dallas on Monday to keep hope alive. Instead, the throw it away, literally. Andy Reid's stubborn attempt to never run the ball bit him in the rear when McNabb, with 2+ minutes remaining and a lead, lossed a TD pass to the other team. Horrible!! They have another must win game in New York this weekend...but no McNabb. A loss there puts them 4-6 and three games back of the G-men and Cowboys for the division...and the Buccaneers and Falcons for the wildcard. Ouch!!
I MISS THOSE OLD NBA ARENAS. Sure, the new ones are awesome...but they all seem like, well, cookie cutters. The suites, the huge scoreboards, that screen that circles the arena. They all have that. Give me the Boston Garden. Chicago Stadium. The argyle trimmings of The Mecca. The bland Hemisfair Arena. The high school looking Capital Centre. Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix and Portland. The sky high McNichols Arena. The Salt Palace. The Summitt. Market Square Arena. The Omni. Reunion Arena.

Sportz,
Lots of rumors of T.O. going to Atlanta too. My question to you is why or why not is Atlanta the next unfortunate team to sign T.O.?
Lew
Lew,
Well, Owens lives in Atlanta now....so it would be a nice fit for him then [after his news conference, he flew into Atlanta just a few hours after I picked up someone from the airport there].
But why NOT Atlanta?? Well, the offensive coach there is the same coach that Terrell Owens berated on the sidelines while both were with the Niners. Word is that neither really wants anything to do with each other. Also, the way the Falcons are set up....I really don't think that Owens style and Vick's passing style totally mesh. I could be completely wrong about that....it is just how I feel. I mean, Owens would fit perfectly into the offense they run, but I'm not sure that Vick can maximize it yet. Though with Owens there, it could hasten his learning.
